VESA 2 vs VESA 1 ?

Can anyone explain the main differences and the main issues with these two modes, or give us a good link on these two versions of the VESA standards ?

From what I can tell, VESA 2 standards got slightly more rigid then version 1's and required that a few more capabilities be present. For example, the primary intent of VESA was not to require that any specific video modes exist or that there be any specific correlation between a mode integer and the characteristics of that mode, just that there be a well-defined procedure for the programmer to determine what modes were supported and what their characteristics were. VESA 1 was based around that limited philosophy. VESA 2 appears to have standardized at least a limited set of mode integers that have specific characteristics. Those modes don't necessarily have to exist, but if they do they're supposed to have the characteristics explicitly described by VESA 2 for the video board to be "VESA 2 compatible." (I still use VESA 4F01 to verify the video mode's capabilities. Not everybody (i.e., *cough* Toshiba), necessarily follows all of the VESA 2 spec.)

Another difference is that VESA 1 didn't require that "extended information" (i.e., resolution, bit depth, etc.) be available, only that the programmer be able to determine whether or not the extended information was available. (But if it was, VESA 1 specified how it was to be obtained.) VESA 2 requires that it be available.

And I'm sure there are more differences. (I program for version 1, when possible.)
