Maze Daze!
#1
Hey everyone! I've come up with yet another idea. This time the game is open to anyone interested in helping out.
Read about the idea below and let's see what can be done! I'd love to play this game!

Quote:"Maze Daze" design brief.

Inspiration:
Woodsies Gem Shop, Mildura, Vic. AU.
Here they have a maze out back to get right lost in. In it are 18 one way gates.
Most of these gates will inevitably lead you back to the start, or to a give up
gate. One path, however gets you through to the end.

Concept:
To replicate a maze with similar design concepts as the maze above. Except online,
and a lot larger. Perhaps 25x25 squares to start with, maybe go larger later on to
a size of perhaps 100x100. Should I add levels? Adding a second level to a maze of
size 25x25 would probably make the game about 100 times harder.

Design:
3D first person view, unsure whether to use a ship, like in Super Maze Wars or a
person played by the player to run through the maze. No doubt a ship would be less
work to impliment, since there is less complexity in animation, and the only goal
is to get YOURSELF through the maze.

Maze structure:
Could be anything really. Must haves:
* Entry gate, or entry point
* Winning gate
* Give up gate
* Numerous gates
* Numerous paths, dead ends, etc

Action:
Enter maze, either through entry gate or entry point.
Travel through maze against the clock and other players to advance to next maze.
Open one way gates and go through them in the hope of getting to the winning gate.
Exit through give up gate if a player cannot find their way out the maze.
Exit maze through winning gate and calculate score.
Wait for other players tofinish within given time limit.
Those who fail to finish through either gate are out of the game.
Those who exit through give up gate in time will advance, but lose a massive score.
Those who exit through winning gate will get a bonus of some sort, based on time.

Score:
After a maze has been tested, a set time limit will be imposed. This would be the
minimum amount of time needed to get through the maze if the correct path is followed.
After this time, an extra 25% (to the second) of the minimum time will elapse before
score countdown begins. When the minimum time needed x5 has elapsed, the level ends,
and all players not finished are thrown out of the game.
A maze will have a starting bonus of 100 points per second of minimum time taken to
finish it. Eg:
2m 45s = 165s = 16500 points.
After 165*1.25 ~= 206s or 3m 26s score is counted down.
5*165 = 825s
825-206=619s or 10m 19s.
This is known as the countdown period, and score bonus is deducted at a consistant rate
as time is elapsed.
Therefore:
16500 points must be spread evenly over 10m 19s.
So:
16500 / 619 * 100 = 3.75s
If my calculations are correct, every 3.75s, 100 points is deducted.
When time is up, score should be zero.
Anyone exiting in this time will recieve points to the calculated value.
If for some reason, a player exits the maze through the winning gate before the minimum
time has elapsed, the player will receive a bonus of an undecided value.

Extra features that I think should go in:
Music is a must have.
A "Big Brother Intruder" style system:
Should a player be booted out after not finishing a maze, the game host could take this
player, and place them in a maze being played later on. Solely to confuse people and/or
distract them. An "intruder" would probably not get any bonus score, and would maybe not
get advanced to the next level since they would have been already booted.

EDIT:
Raycaster or Raytracer? What's the difference?
Your thoughts?
I hear that a raytracer will aloow angled walls other than the 90 degree varieties. If so, a maze would be infinitly more complex, and I could add some other features like more physical levels to a single maze, making it extremely difficult to get through it. Perhaps that can be left for another version.

Should players be able to shoot each other in play, each regenerating at the start of the maze and losing X amount of points, thereby "buying" their next chance? If all points are lost, should they be booted?
Screwing with your reality since 1998.
