Too many Off-Topic Threads.
#1
This is a programming site, and I, along with everyone else, should remember that. How do we solve the problem that is the lack of real programming threads here?

The site's being anti-productive. Instead of the off-topic threads being used as a cool place to hang out while the programmers make programs, it's being used as their home while they sit on their fat asses all day and think about what their next off-topic thread should be titled.

This issue must be addressed and a solution should be found IMMEDIATELY. We must make this site's majority posts in the programming sections.

Thanks,
TheAdventMaster

Duly noted, now I shall throw that in my outbox and send it off to someone who cares.

Seriously, I see your point. But if life was about work, what your saying is that work is all we should be allowed to talk about. If what makes a community is talk about one thing and that one thing only, it would be mighty boring. You'd leave, trust me. This is part of what makes a resource forum so popular - it's COMMUNITY. This off-topic stuff is what keeps us together, alongside QB/FB. It's what makes a community tick. Also we learn about other people, and their countries, etc etc...

I have to admit there are quite a lot of off-topic threads happening, especially of late. Yes, this is a programming site. Perhaps there should be more coding going on behind the scenes. Rest assured, those people "sitting on their fat asses all day" are actually behind a computer, probably coding 99.9% of the time there. The other 0.1% of the time they may checking their email or answering one of the "too many off-topic posts". Is that not what the "General / Debate" forum is all about? Is it for this purpose that they were created? Yes.

I do not moderate these forums, I do not run this site. I have not been here at this site for much more than a year. But if you hang around long enough, you will see as much as I do that this really isn't a problem. I don't want to sound out of line here, but I think perhaps you should sit back and wait a little longer before making assumptions.

That is all, and thank you for your feedback.
Screwing with your reality since 1998.

I've been here for years. IMO, people should talk about what they want to talk about! It's a community as much as a programming forum.

Thanks Anarky for your post.

I agree wholy that this site's off-topic forum area is what helps keep the community together, but I disagree with the fact that those people are coding so often while posting on those off-topic areas.

I've seen less coding threads and more off-topic ones ever since the off-topic became overflowed.

I'm not saying we shouldn't post in the off-topic, but I'd like to find a way to promote coding more than talking for a while, until the balance between the two is once again found.

We'll hire an international armed squad to make sure that every visitor uses atleast half his time programming. No problem.

There's not alot you can do about it, really. I think a large portion of the people here come for the non-programming related socializing, and maybe occasionally jump into a programming related thread if anything catches their eye.

However, maybe it would help if we joined some of all the programming related forums (there are around 9-10 now... that's alot for a community this size)?

1) how do you have any idea what the people that post here do day by day? (rhetorical: you don't)

2) you have not been here long enough to decide what kind of site it is. (let alone try and force your views on people that have been here more than a few weeks)

3) for someone who seems to care about the site, you have a really crappy opinion about its community. (there are other forums you may visit: you don't need to ignorantly berate everyone here)

4) if you want more programming discussion, wth did you post this? (everyone will discuss this, or ignore you. either way, no programming! lol)

OK. Go for it. IMMEDIATELY.

Well the lack of programming threads should show that they're not doing much coding ^_^;;, or that they're posting somewhere else.

I know what kind of site it is. I've been here since...March 29th, 2006. That's not *so* long, but it was long enough for me to see the decline in posts in the programmer's forum.

Perhaps though, things just take time and they posted everything as soon as I got here, then went back to work afterwards.

Oh, well I love the community. It's my favorite one out there. I was kinda hoping the insults would become some kinda motivation. Like football coaches calling their players sissies Big Grin

Because someone might read it and thing, "Wow I have been slacking off. *gets to work*"
