Google does randomized testing on user interfaces. They do this by giving random users cookies so that they show up with the interface. This interface won't work because you hated it (and you probably aren't the only one) and they know that. Different interfaces are usually blogged about.

This is why it's probably glitchy. Eventually they would have deleted your cookie and you'd have gone back to normal.
It is actually possible to extract the bit from your cookie and give it to someone else. I've gotten a certain interface from someone that way, just to play with it.
