lets see, when I open Qbasic and go under "help" to "about" it says;

I also have QBRUN45 in my file however, if that makes any difference. As well as this, where Ralph's says "Version 4.5 differences" (3rd from the bottom under contents) mine simply says "Version Differences"

O.K., so you have version 1.1 Skyler posted before, saying you could compile with that version, but, since I don't have that version, you will have to get further help from them that do.
But, since it was only the secon version, the first being 1.0, just saying "Version Differences" is just as good as anything else. i just thought that it might be one way to get your version, and no, that doesn't get the version.
As to clicking on "Help, About", in version 4.5, Help does not have an "About" choice. How do YOU get it?

If 1.1 supports compiling, HOW DO YOU DO IT??? Because, as I've said before, I cannot locate the compile option in the program. Ralph, as to your question about how I get the version, I told you how, I go to Help and there is an About choice which I select.

As to the About, i just thought it was a new word, indtroduced in Windows. I don't remember seeing it elsewhere, and certainly not in QuickBASIC 4.5! I would not have thought MS had it in version 1.1, and removed it somewhere in between 1.1 and 4.5.

I went to QuickBASIC Cafe (qbcafe.net), and downloaded QB1.1. It turns out that that is the familiar QBasic.exe, that MS shipped with its Windows system (I believe), and it is an interpreter only! It does not allow you to compile. At this point, I would say, forget all the oldies, and update to QuickBASIC 4.5, if you want to continue with qb. Most, if not all, posters here use 4.5, which has more bells and whistles than any BASIC before it, and is THE most popular of them all, including the later 7.1, or PDS (Programmer's Developement System), which, even though more powerful, is not the most popular, probably because it cost so much, originally. Once you are running in 4.5, you'll be a much happier person than now, in 1.1. I guarantee it!

Regarding 4.5, there's a QuickBASIC 4.5 and there's a QBasic 4.5. I think Ralph is suggesting that you get QBasic 4.5.

No, I meant QuickBASIC 4.5. I still have my five original 5 1/4" floppies, and they all say Microsoft R QuickBASIC, Version 4.5.
I also have a Microsoft Update, which begins:

Further down, it reads:

So, no matter what people call QuickBASIC 4.0 and 4.5, Microsoft called them QuickBASIC, not QBasic. However, if you say version 4.5, we are talking about QuickBASIC version 4.5, no matter if someone calls it QB4.5, qb4.5, QBasic 4.5, or any other way. And, since version 1.1 is an interpreter that was called QBasic by Microsoft, I hate calling the streamlined editor/compiler that is QuickBASIC 4.5 by the QBasic 4.5 that some use. Again, "Would not a rose by any other name..."

Ah, Wonderful! I have downloaded 4.5 and now have created a working .exe file! Thanks so much for all of you who helped me over the last couple of days! Who knows, I might return with more wonderful questions soon! Thanks again!

Is PDS the qbasic version which contains the QBX.EXE as the main application contained in the BIN folder?
I have qb 1.1, 4.0 and 7.1...

Yes. By the way, I started with version 3.0, went on to 4.0, then got an offer I could not resist from Microsoft to upgrade to 4.5, and I was very happy I did. It was the best of them all, I believe, and still is the overwhelmingly most popular version. When MS published version 7, or PDS, the price was too high for me, and, not being a "true" progrmmer, I had no need of the additional capabilities of version 7. So, I stayed with 4.5, as have a lot of folk.
