Two Tiered Internet

Quote:In a future, people will be charged for breathing. I'm sure.

Not breathing per se but the vital oxygen tank will have a proprietary connection.

It's funny, in the parts of the world where basic rights aren't as carefully guarded
as in the "west" world (yeah right...), the internet is more and more becoming a steam
vent for opinions and discussions. All while we tend to get closer to the opressive
goverments. Perhaps not in ideology, but in practice...

This is just a first step in a larger scheme to privatize the internet. What AT&T et all really want is to be able to pick who uses their networks. They aren't making any money on you and me, what they want are the folks with the cash, the big corps.

Once this passes you'll see all sorts of setups where there will be private inter-networks setup for companies that are willing to shell out the big bucks to use the super-highway, while the rest of use wonder where our internet connection went.

The days of the open internet are numbered. China is building their own internet, as are other countries. What you will eventually see are a bunch of private networks, running on the new technology, while the rest of us, if we can connect at all, will be poking along on 1950's technology.

Other countries are building their own private internets because they're sick of how the USA has been handling it since good old GWB stole the presidency in 2000 (don't think this has nothing to do with it, because it does). When the internet becomes a veritable police state, I'm off it permanently. I have a feeling that many people will be the same way. We'll go back to using our telephones (you remember those little things that go ring-ring?).

If this passes, it will probably kill the web in the US. I wouldn't bother with it anymore... and most people I know would have nothing to do with it either. :x

I believe that the reason something like this would get passed is if (1) the congressmen are getting paid by the companies themselves to endorse this weird bill, or (2) the congressmen are too stupid to understand what the heck they're agreeing to. Which is why, hopefully, if a mass amount of people write to their respective (or not respective) representatives, something might slip through and actually reach them and if it's written in a thoughtful manner the congressmen may actually understand what's going on. There's also http://www.savetheinternet.com that has updates on which senators are for and which senators are against the Net Neutrality bill, which I guess is the bill to keep the 'net *free* from ISP's meddling... (thereby meaning senators who are FOR the bill are the good guys) For the most part it seems as though senators from the Democratic party are voting for net neutrality, that is, keeping the internet the way it is, and senators from the Republican party are voting against net neutrality, that is, giving more money to companies that have a lot of it already. Those Republicans... haha! Such rascals!
