I don't really like frills on software. If I had the option to switch to Plan 9 and use Rio without sacrificing some more modern things I need like a modern web browser I would. That's why Vista and OS X make me through up - they look more like toys than operating systems.

Course you have those who like plain white cases, drive the old Model-T's, and have very plain furniture, but not everyone is like that....
You have it reversed in some places - plain furniture is in. Fancy furniture is out. I don't think you see too many people with couches modeled like thrones outside of yourt granny's house. Plain cases are also quite in. I don't think that Macs(except for the PowerMac and Mac Pro), iPods, or the VAIO have silver crested lining, neon lights, and roman gods carved into their cases, huh?

Quote:Very few people are using java as a main language. Java is mainly used for plug-ins and such, right? Java can't make programs, it doesn't have a compiler (in most people's definition.) It has to run on it's own virtual machine, you can't make a .app or .exe file with it. C++ isn't that old, I think it was first used extensively to create the neXtSTEP programs.

Developers flocked to Java. They say it improved on the downfalls of C in every way. Oh, and NeXTSTEP use Objective C, at least according to wikipedia.

Wrong. Java is pretty widespread. That a compiler doesn't produce machine-dependent executables doesn't mean anything. The language is pretty usable and has tons of applications in web programming. Web services, server applications, etcetera. It's the main programming language for cell phones, so I think it's pretty used. It will be the programming language for blu-ray players (movie menues and multimedia interactivity), etcetera. It's also used more and more on desktop applications which can run on top of any hardware/operating system without changes. I fail to see how Java "can't make programs" or how "very few people are using java". I can guarantee that 90% of the application software used, produced and maintained in the business I work for is written in Java, JSP or using technologies based on Java (axis for webservices, vignette, cocoon, etcetera).

C++ was developed circa 1983, so I guess it's not very recent. 23 years old is ANCIENT in computer technollogy terms Wink BASIC itself is 41 years old.

It's just that things aren't the way they are "just because".
