QB vs. FB , should I even bother switching?

I don't visit many other forums, but I get the impression that this forum is thriving.
In the beginning, there is darkness – the emptiness of a matrix waiting for the light. Then a single photon flares into existence. Then another. Soon, thousands more. Optronic pathways connect, subroutines emerge from the chaos, and a holographic consciousness is born." -The Doctor

Quote:Ive never realy tried FB much, and I was wondering what you guys thought was preferable about FB over QB other than "Corrupted or totaly skrewed string space" errors.

In addition to what red_Marvin said:

Option Explicit
It's saved me many headaches that have taken me days to figure out in QB. I no longer curse myself for finally finding that variable I spelt fooabr when it was DIM'd foobar.

It's Free
Unlike QB, FB is completely free. FB is licensed under the GNU GPL. QB is not free, I think most people who code in QB have a pirate copy.

It has developers who love you (or at least they acknowlege you exist)
FB is being constantly improved. Microsoft try to pretend QB doesn't exist.

It has a cool horse logo
QB has no logo.

It's easy to switch
There is no reason to stick with QB. Other than nostalgia. Everything that can be done in QB can be done in FB... usually better Tongue

Altho I prefer to code in FB, I think I'm not as impressed with other's FB programs because I know what can be done. I was always impressed with what people like Rel and Jark could do in QB. (I know a few people did impressive programs, but these 2 are the only ones who I remember as constantly working on new things that impressed me.)

Pretty much all the forums started quieting down when the newest QBE didn't come on time, and things have been getting quieter since. QBE kept the word alive, and without it, maybe we all simply have little to do with coding...

Not me. I've finished two projects since QBE stopped updating. I always liked reading it, but I usually couldn't find the time to read every article. That's just me though. Wink

:: FreeBASIC is made by the BASIC community, for the BASIC community. People like you and me actively contribute and have a direct effect on what directions FreeBASIC takes (because of this, FreeBASIC has an entire language dialect dedicated to nothing else but to be compatible with QB Smile).

:: FreeBASIC is cross-platform. Currently DOS, Windows, Linux and XBox are supported.

:: FreeBASIC will eventually be a front-end for GCC [gnu.org], which means it will gain not only all of the platforms/architectures that GCC supports, but also all of the optimization capabilities as well - (neither QB nor FB are optimizing compilers).

:: FreeBASIC is becoming a multi-paradigm language, much like C++; it supports low-level procedural programming - (like C) - it's starting to support built-in object-orientated programming - (like Java) - and generic programming is possible through its C-like pre-processor - (like <insert language here>). Thus, FreeBASIC offers more than one way to shave the pussy[cat].

Take a look at some of the more important compiler/language features [fbwiki], as well as the differences between FreeBASIC and QB [fbwiki].
