Sound Mixer?

Hey,

I have just acquired a bunch of really sweet songs by Chanticleer and Cantus and The Rose Ensamble (they sing a lot of baroque and renaissance), and I like listening to them while I'm programming or whatever, but I also like being on MSN messenger...

The problem is my music is so delicate I have to turn it way up to hear it, and MSN is so obtuse that it is EXTREMELY LOUD whenever anyone talks to me. So my question is there a program that someone knows of that you can set the level of sound coming out of the programs you're running? I tried to search for it on Google, but I had no idea what to search for.

Try Audacity. Select all then use Normalise function to pump it up to an acceptable level. If it isn't loud enough then use the amplify function.

The normalize function is available in most audio editing programs, and it's probably a good idea-- Whatever you do, don't amplify it beyond that point though... You'll only end up clipping it and losing some of the audio data. (And possibly gaining some static )

I just turn off msn's sounds, personally... So pretty much the only thing making any sound at any given time is iTunes.

Ctrl - click on the song that you want
press Get Info
Select the Options tab
Volume adjustment is at the top

These are instructions for a Mac, in iTunes for Windows it might be a little different, but similar.

LoL, thanks. I just ended up disabling MSN's sounds. And that's all fine and good. Now I can enjoy my music without the BADADUNK! annoyingness.
