Quote:Microsoft is touting Vista's improved security, but no operating system is perfectly secure (and no OS ever will be)

Yes it will! Disconnect it from any networks, bury it in ten feet of concrete, and voila! A completely secure workstation!

Not very useful, but at least it's secure...

Now that many have had a good chance at trying Vista, it appears the main problems come with the ' MUST HAVE EVERYTHING NEW ' brigade, who blindly rush out and attempt to install Vista on an existing PC. In spite of there being a site for testing its viability below all does not appear to be straitforward.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/default.mspx

Pesonally I would NEVER attempt to install a newer version of any new Windows on an existing PC. How can you ever expect the new version to include ALL the drivers needed for every software and hardware in existence, when this was obviously produced often long before anyone ever heard of the new version of Windows such as Vista.

If I do convert to Vista it will be for a completely new system where I hope the manufacturer of the PC has had a good chance to test it works OK.

I might be getting Vista when XP isnt doing the job anymore.
The only reason Im using XP is because most games etc. are designed for Windows, and refuse to run under anything else.
Hell, most things are designed for Windows.

I also dont mind XP, its stable (I cant remember the last time it crashed, seriously, and I do have a good memory).
The average user fills his/her computer with loads of bullshit and/or incorrectly installs software, and when it crashes, blames it on Windows, which is in all honesty unfair.

Now I might sound like a Microsoft-puppet, but I am not.
I used Windows 98SE before getting XP, it wasnt nearly as stable as XP, but I didnt have problems running it for days without crashing. It did need a reformat every now and then though.
If Linux was better supported, then no doubt, Id use it.
But for now, XP works well, and I wont change it, for Linux nor Vista.
If it aint broke, dont fix it. Smile

XP is more stable than any other version of Windows since 3.1, Vista is terrible... right now. Within six months most of the compatibility bugs will be worked out and a service pack will be released.

Linux isn't very well supported, but it is extremely stable. There is a program called Wine that allows Linux to run Windows programs, I'm not sure if it is 100% compatible, but most Linux users dual boot.

Once that first service pack comes out it should be fine and by then most software will be upgraded. What is it with Microsoft and not using backwards compatibility? *cough* 360 *cough*

Windows is always notorious for not being very secure, why do you think most servers use Unix or Linux?

It's not like I hate Windows or anything Tongue *Nobody recognized what my avatar means right?*
f you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. The scary part is that if you play it forwards it installs Windows.

Windows 2000 is the most stable and lightest version of Windows.

And wallace, I remember what your avatar means. You've declared war on Microsoft. Or something like that.

Forgive my ignorance guys but can you explain what is the point of having a dual core 32 & 64 bit CPU, if Windows Vista can only be bought for EITHER 32 or 64 bit but not both. Besides presumably you need to set the CPU to 32 or 64 bit when you start up in the CMOS settings, so you cannot change over afterwards unless you re-boot the system again.

I hear rumours Vista will not recognise DOS programs. So does that mean an end to dear old Qbasic, and QuickBasic?

Thanks Gordon.

Not that I particularly care if it did, but I'm fairly sure dosbox or the like will run qbasic just fine.
