Windows Vienna
#11
whatever happens, the next few years are going to be interesting to watch. I'm even thinking about dual booting Linux... In fact, I'm going to do that right now.

The day I can play the newest fps on linux with no emulation and just as fast as on windows, I'll happily switch. Until then, directx determines my OS...

Quote:Microsoft has said that they plan to release Windows Vienna in 2009. This seems a little strange since it took them 7 years to develope Vista and Vista is basically XP with Mac-like graphics.
Plus all of the changes and improvements made to the kernel and the overhaul to the security model.

Quote:So what do you think? 1) Is Vienna already mostly written and Vista is just scraps from it? 2) Microsoft can write Vienna in two years? 3) 2009 isn't even close to the actual release date?
Or, its been developed concurrently, much like the 9x and NT line were, with some amount of code sharing going on. Microsoft were, for a while at least, releasing new operating systems every three years or so (95, 98, XP, 2003 Server), so its not infeasible. It is also fairly unclear at the moment whether Vienna is a major or minor upgrade (Vista was originally planned as a minor upgrade to XP, think 95->98 ).

Quote:Wait, Microsoft has been playing with Unix? When did this happen?
In 1979. Try to keep up.

You are everything that is wrong with the Internet. Linux is simply not a viable alternative to Windows in many cases, especially when the only reason given for switching to Linux is "cause its, like, uber leet, dood".

Actually I do/did. What does that have to do with anything? Tongue
Microsoft is the devil, just look at this, its disturbing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4ti4lpAD6Q "Oh not yet! ...So kids, on the count of three push the "Wow Starts Now" button and launch Windows Vista....Yeaahh!!" :-?

This is pretty funny though:

I'm not telling you to use Linux because it's "uber leet dood," but because it's free and Windows isn't.

I had it on my PC for almost a week before deleting it and installing Ubuntu.

Okay, it's XP with Mac graphics and a security system that asks you what you are doing every thirty seconds. That security thing was my main reason for switching to Linux.

I hope Microsoft is playing with UNIX, UNIX's security system is unmatched, its why almost every server and database in the world uses it.
f you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. The scary part is that if you play it forwards it installs Windows.

But then hackers will have turn their attention to hacking Unix systems instead of soft bellied Microsoft systems. They'll get stronger until they can eventually rule the world.

Which means I better become a hacker fast.

And what exactly where you looking for in an operating system besides "shiny mac graphics"?

Quote:That security thing was my main reason for switching to Linux.
If you really want security, try OpenBSD. It's security model leaves Linux for dead. Two remote exploits in ten years ain't bad.

Netcraft lists Apache's market share around 59% as of Feburary 2007, which is hardly "most". Apache can even run on Windows based machines too, which is not indicated in the survey. I can't find a more recent analysis, but in 2001 Windows was running around about 50% of the Internet's servers.

So is syphilis, but you don't hear many people advocating that.

Shit is free too and yet I wouldn't recommend eating it instead of paying for food...
