Full Version: Okay, I know this is a tired, beaten, and past-failed idea..

But really, I feel that this time around, if we actually put our minds to it, organize it carefully, and actually try to have fun doing it, we can work it out. I think we should all try to make a game. A fun, innovative, enjoyable game that's not so complicated that it'll end up being screwed up, but still fun so that if we were to post it at a random site on the internet, people would get enjoyment out of it. I heard there was something that went on a while back that was pretty much smiliar to this, and didn't work out, but I'd still like to give it a shot. It's been at least a year, hasn't it?

So basically, I figured that we could organize it in a pretty obvious way. Get some programmers, sprite designers, musicians, planners, and anyone else with the talents for it, and we could coordinate it in a forum, chatroom, this thread, or whatever could possibly work.

The actual project that I had in mind is a 2D, sidescrolling RPG/Platform game similar to Goemon's Great Adventure. With melee attacks, projectile attacks, 2 player, enemies somewhat more realistic than Goemon's Great Adventure, and towns that you can walk around in, and interact with people in. I haven't completely thought it up yet, but I'm sure I don't really have to just yet. And for those who have no idea what Goemon's Great Adventure is, Here's some screenshots that should hopefully get the point across.

I figured the game could be done in C, since that seems to be the most stable thing around, but if there's any other languages that could handle stuff, and won't get in the way at all, we could go with that too.

This is kind of a quick post, and I haven't really put too much thought in this yet, but yeah. Who's up for it? Like I said, I realise there's been an idea like this in the past, and that it's failed, but really, this is far from impossible. If we get people with the right talents, and the right attitude, this could rule.
I'd like to be a part of this, as a programmer. Unfortunately, I don't know C. Sad But, if you guys decide to go for it in FB, I'd love to help.
Well there's usually a reason these things fail, almost always because whoever's coordinating it doesn't have much experience, well, coordinating.
Personally I really don't work well with others; (some exceptions, mind you) or working on someone else's idea... So I'm gonna sit this out.
However, if it does come together, it should be cool to see.
I don't think I'd be able to contribute much either. I've now been out of the programming loop for some time and I don't forsee coming back anytime soon. Besides, I've been working on V Planet's revival and taking care of Rhiannon over the past week, so things have been really busy...and I'm not much of a "team player" either, as much as I try to be. So I'm with Josiah on this one.
i'm afraid you can count me out for now. I've been making a sports round robin organizer program, and there are some seriously simple problems that i just can't handle right now because i'm in the wrong state of mind. Until I know that I know that I can do a dependable and decent job, count me out for now.

Do it in C?!?! Where's your Basic pride?!?!?!

Still, if organized right, it could be an interesting idea. First thing you gotta do though is organize who's gonna do what. for example:

scripting engine: rokkuman
scripts design: rokkuman
particle engine: rokkuman
game engine: rokkuman
sprites: rokkuman
tiles: rokkuman
npc engine: rokkuman

and so on and so on. Then you gotta make sure that the person doing each part will make them flexible enough to be integrated into the main module without too much hassle. Of course, none of these things that i'm saying are how they should be done... just ignore me. I'm only a slice of lime.
It sounds like a wicked idea, but haven't you ever heard of the old saying?

"If at first you don't succeed, give up all further attempts and destroy all evidence of you ever trying in the first place."

And I re-itterate what barok said. C? That BASICALLY goes against the whole THEME of this joint does it not?

Mean maybe...but true, definately. Smile Sometimes, the truth hurts. Big Grin
Awwwwwwwwwwwww! You guys take the fun out of like... everything... Cry
I'll join as a programme and musician. I write music AND programs.

Plus I know C/C++ as well as BASIC.

I'm in.

[EDIT] Not sure I like the style of GFX in that Geomon's thing, but hey, this is OUR game, not that game.
For some reason the forum didn't notify of new posts in this thread. However if you are in, email me here.
