Well, I was reading Pritch's thread in the Debate forum, and I thought it would be cool if we had our own little poetry "competition". Here are the rules:
1) You can write in any style you like (including Haiku!)
2) You must write your poem based on a "spur"; for example, if I was given the spur "Falling cheese", I would write a poem that somehow featured falling cheese.
3) In order to find your spur, you must read the poem that came before yours and find the line or phrase that you like the best and use it as your spur.
4) You must use the spur as the title of your poem; that is, you must put it in quotes at the top of your post, before the poem itself.
Needless to say, I will start:
"Starfire"
Lying on our backs
our eyes no longer on each other,
but on the fading daylight.
Watching the sun dip ever lower;
the golden eye slowly closing
as if the world was falling asleep.
Waiting for the stars to come out
waiting in the long grass
our hands still tightly clasped.
The Sun falls below the horizon.
Deep within an inky blue sky
Tiny points of fire begin their silent vigil;
watching over the dark world below.
Looking at the stars;
entwined in each otherâs arms,
the wonder of the moment
keeping us from moving.
Waiting for the moonrise;
our faces half hidden in the darkness,
the brightness of the Starfire
casting all other things into shadow.
A faint breeze stirs the trees;
ruffles the grass of our meadow.
A falling star crosses the sky,
its long trail vanishing in a flash.
Who knows how long we shall stay here;
watching the sky with tired eyes?
Then finally slipping into the peaceful slumber
of a summerâs night together:
your head on my chest,
my arm about your waist.
Who knows how long
the magic of Midsummer will last?
Who knows how long we shall last;
our bodies and minds joined,
our souls flying as one
unto the ending of the Starfire above us.
