Not only are we self-aware, but we are aware of our own awareness. Psychologically, metacognition is very advantageous.
There are several theories concerning what "thought" is from a scientific (as opposed to a philosophical) standpoint. Try reading _Shadows of the Mind_ to get a few of them.
How would we know whether or not a computer is self-aware?
