I think a program is aware of its self when it can function without human input even to the xtent of changing its own code or even language. The only problem is that it can not create its own purpose, that is what we must do, thus I do not think that until more knowledge about the brain and how it functions. Without a purpose there is no reason for it to do anything, We have to first figure out what our purpose is, what drives us to do stuff, what makes us for example want to program, its because we like it, what do we like about that makes it fun, what cause us to like those things, were does that feeling come form.
As you might notice this is a very confusing topic.
I watched a tv show the other day. It was about a compitition to see who could make the best robot to go over a disaster site. The robot had to act on its own and find survivours and dangers, such as fire chemicals.
It may apear that the robot has a mind of its own. It does not it is just following pre programmed responses, such as see fire, check heat, stay away, add to map.
My thought on the matter is that we are looking at it in the wrong way and there is special key to solve it. But this issue may become very contrvsual, as it could be said we are allready pre programmed by God. If this is true then a robot that has a mind of its own is impossible and never able to be reached.
