Turning on EMS
#11
EMM386.EXE is a device driver. It's used in the CONFIG.SYS, not at the DOS command-line.

ok sorry, maybe i didnt tell u properly.

right click on a DOS program .exe file > properties > program > advanced > MS-DOS mode > specify new MS-DOS configuration

i type in : DOS=HIGH,UMB
Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM HIGHSCAN

Thats the for the config.sys, but it works only when i restart.

I cant type it in the actual config.sys because it doesnt work.

S'funny, this is all my cofig.sys has:
Code:
device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys

..and I've never had to fiddle with the memory tab in Win98 (they're all set to AUTO) and all ems stuff works fine.
In a world without walls and doors, who needs Windows and Gates?

My experience wit W98:
I had a P166 where no DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS OR DEVICE=EMM386 was needed in CONFIG.SYS to be able to enable EMS in shorcut's properties.

But I had many troubles getting access to EMS in my P4, I asked some questions here before the DB was erased. Actually the computer needed these lines and needed also the useable sections of upper memory to be specified as parameters to EMM386: something as I=C000-CFFF

Don't ask me for the actual parameters I used, because I switched to W2000 some months ago.

I think those who don't mess w/ the Memory tab probably have their _default.pif file edited as such....

I run Win2000 AND Win98, and in both EMS and XMS is not available.

When running EMM386.EXE it says 'pageframe could not be allocated. Initializing of expanded memory failed'.

that's impossible. A dosbox can allocate as much ems and xms as it needs. in NT/2K/XP be sure you create a PIF for modify the default.pif to allow for 16mb ems and xms. in 98 be sure you take the proper steps in the command-line stuff, but if i've never had to fiddle with it, and you can just set the dosbox's properties to allow for the right amount of memory.

In dos I had to use some kind of memory manager that came with dos that worked pretty well.

It's not "impossible". He either doesn't have 108k free in the UMA for the pageframe and EMS table, or he needs to set the pageframe address manually.

(The DOS memory optimizer is MEMMAKER, which also works with Windows 95 and 98.)

Yeah. The easiest thing to do is:

1.- Get your Windows 95 / Windows 98 CD ROM and locate the OLDMSDOS folder.

2.- Either copy its contents to C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND or copy its contents to a new folder that you have to include in your path (modifying AUTOEXEC.BAT) -> so the easiest way is copying it into C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND Wink

3.- Open a DOS box, and type in MEMMAKER

That application will configure EMS for you. You just need to answer some questions. If you do something wrong, the program just undoes the changes made, so you can try again with slightly different settings.
