I thought I'd add my few cents here... I'm one of the main developers or YaBB SE (another forum software) and I used to use qbasic/QuickBasic.
Anyhow... this most certainly does not use mdb. phpBB uses mySQL and MyISAM tables, which is... a much SUPERIOR format.
You use ASP, huh. And some people say Quickbasic is bad...
. ASP does indeed support MySQL, but you'll have a lot of fun getting it to work. First, hope your host has bothered itself to install MyODBC. I doubt they have.
IIS isn't that good.... but it's really not that bad, either. There are actually a *FEW* things it can do that apache can't. Not many... but a few. Gotta give it props for that, eh?
MySQL is about/almost as powerful as MS SQL, has a syntax that makes more sense, and just generally is better. I don't understand why you'd use MS SQL unless you REALLY wanted to burn money.
I know of few ASP forums... and less that use MS SQL. However, making a forum in any language - let alone a language as useless as ASP - is an ordeal. You'll spend a large number of hours on it.
oracle, you're right it does... however, I've never seen anyone use phpBB with Access. MS SQL, yes, but Access...? No. that's crazy, it would be far too slow.
IIS is easy to get working, that's it's strength. If you want to learn how, search the web or look at
www.yabbse.org. I know I've posted my own tutorial on it there... a few times. It works fine for large sites, but doesn't have the scalability apache has - realistically, it's almost like ASP vs. PHP.
They do sell IIS. XP comes with a crippled version that will only run one website. 98 came with an even more crippled one.
It comes with any Server edition of Windows, however.
