Buying a new computer
#11
Quote:MEC,
You mention that you want to buy in an outlet/store. Well then you're only going to find what is sold in the stores near you. I don't know where in Conn.

I understand that i more than likely wont find anyplace good within an hours drive from where i live, that is why I would make a trip to boston, or new york, someplace where they sell so many computers, they don't put that much effort into trying to get you to buy the next model up for only 1,000$ more. and rst, I tried something like you said when me and my dad bought a new disk drive, and the people almost kicked us out of the store. all i did was sneeze and drop an add offering the same drive for 50$ less. you'd be suprised how threatining a 5'4'' man can look when he's mad.

They sell as many computers in/around Boston/New York as anywhere else, and they will have the same computers, too..

Moneo: When I was in Mexico a few weeks ago (Yucatan), we haggled for prices on souvenirs.... they don't do that here. Here, if there is a scratch or defect (even if it is small), THEN you get $50 or $100 money back..

Yucatan, great! Were you touring the pyramids or did you also go to the beach in the Can Cun area?

Yes Mexico is famous for haggling for prices. Regarding "they don't do that here", I lived in the States for 45 years. You haggle prices in the US depending on the place. You don't do it in a fancy department store, but you can do it in most open market places or with street merchants. In Yucatan, you probably didn't buy souvenirs in a department store.

Quote:The dilema here is that i want a 19" flatscreen moniter(Sony), wireless keyboard/mouse(logitech), powerfull PC(undecided), and huge-ass speakers(Bose), and nobody sells pakages like that!! so i thought i could buy most the stuff seperately and put it together. so basically i am looking for the PC itself, not stuff like monitors and other "accesories"(although i would hardly call a monitor an accesory).

Your standards are too high. Why do you want a monitor that big? Could you even see it all at once? And I'll agree that wireless keyboards and mouses (mice? meeces?) are a nice touch and require less fiddling around with tricky cords, but they're not really high on my list of priorities. What, also, can "huge-arse speakers" be used for? Playing music on the computer? No matter what "sound gurus" say, there is no (large or important) difference between the sound various speakers make! A speaker is a speaker and I can't tell the difference. Anyways, even if you can tell the difference, what does it matter? A song is a song. Or are you listening to some kind of highly-formalised chamber music with fancy, elegant trills that will not stand to be butchered by ordinary speakers? (I only really listen to The Beatles on my computer-- distinct lyrics and instrumental sounds).

Quote:I never thought i would have to do this but, I am in the market for a new computer and am willing to spend $2,500 american currency.

You also have too much money Wink.

Quote:You should spend at most $1500 dude... that will get you 1024megs of RAM (512 installed, buy 512, have THEM install it (and test)), 120-160gigs, 2.8ghz, nice big monitor, keyboard/mouse/speakers, Sony (HP/Compaq is bad IMHO)..

You also have set your standards much too high, and have too much money.

A big (19") screen is mandatory for designers. I have tested one using 1600x1200 and it is incredible. You have room for everything you want. But if all you wanna do is playing games, a 17" will do less harm to your neck.

Those speakers this guy mentions are really valuable if you are a musician. But if all you wanna do is playing games, they aren't really necessary.

About buying a complete "Brand PC" as I call them, I strongly discourage you to do so. Buying an HP or a Dell or a Compac is a error, 'cause you are paying the brand, and not the quality. The best thing is going to a computer store and buy your computer device by device selecting what you want, and let them build it for you. That way you'll save money, and maybe for the same price you pay for a compaq you can end with a computer 1.5x times better.

I doubt it, as HP/Compaq uses substandard parts.

you have no idea.

na, I'm really poor, iv'e just been saving for a while... maybe too long... maybe i should just buy a car, yes, a car for $2,500. but i have been saving for quite a while and i feel my hard work should be rewarded.

about the song thing, I am not just getting those speakers for my games, i am also getting them for my band. i want to get some sort of mixing board software that my freind has, and i want to be able to hear every detail incase we make a recording.

19" screen, maybe brought down to 17".

all in all, i think i am set......oh, wait a minute. i still haven't figured out which pc to buy!!!(hence the name of the topic)

You want to hear details, get some good cans like Sennheiser or Grado.
