Encyclopedias
#11
A lot of schools use Encarta, it's supposed to be quite good. However at my level, encyclopaedias are pretty worthless, since they dont help when i have papers to do. I turn to google for what i need, but if what you want is very general info, then Encarta would prolly be the way to go.

You'd also be surprised at how much information you can get from... *gasp* books. The library at my university is friggin' huge, and I can find pretty much anything there.

Actually, my own library isn't too bad. It's nothing like a university library, but not bad. It's a bit limited in scope: mostly math and science (especially natural history). If I wanted to do a research paper, or really study something in depth, I would go to a university library, but I often just want to satisfy my curiosty in other areas. I don't always want to make a special trip to the university just to satisfy my curiosity. I see a good (or reasonably good) encyclopedia as a way to broaden my library.

I could take Aga's advice and get a printed edition, the Britannica is only about $1000. He says that it's "really not that much," but I prefer the price and space of an electronic version.

Is it just me but I could understand things better reading on Paper than in front og the monitor. Paperbacks costs though. ;*(

I prefer books too. For one thing, it is much easier for your eyes to follow the page (no scrolling required), but It's a compromise.

MS Encarta 2003 (not 97, sorry) takes up 510 MB, although there might be a few DLLs I'm not seeing...

$1000 is a hefty price to pay for something that will be obsolete in about 6 months. An electronic one would be much better, cheaper and more uptodate. Then again, for all my curiosities i just go to google =) (MSN.com also has a limited version of encarta)
