HELP WANTED: a free host with unlimited space/bandwidth.
#41
To Rockuman:

Quote:If I'm not mistaken, I offered you free hosting with exactly what you wanted a while back, and you turned it down...

Well, that was back during February 2004, which was just more than about 1½ months *before* the “downloads section needs to be removed” notice even appeared on one of my hosts at all. I did not even know that until I had just recently found that out, man. Sad You know what, if that kind of hosting that you once offered is still available to me, please let me know ( Big Grin ), and also, do let me know about the uptimes (because then, I will know for sure to not let my site suffer any downtimes that’ll hinder the visitors at all).

And to the rest of you (and Rockuman, you might want to listen in on this, too):

Let me tell you how my hosting on the web first began.

When I have first started development on the AAP Official Homepage, I had 50 megabytes (which was approximately 50,000,000 bytes!) of webspace to begin with, which was at that time a *LOT* of memory. Then later on, when Free-Web-Space.org, my first web host, left its own hosting company to be co-branded with 0catch, I moved my entire homepage to my second web host, and from that point, my need for memory and my webspace capacity started to grow and then plenty!!! Big Grin !

And currently right now, in terms of choosing my next web host, I will be careful in doing so ( Wink ! ), as up to now, I have been *quite* desperate on that over some of the recent weeks. But when I finally make my choice...............well, we shall just see what happens, shall we? Cool

Again, God bless all of you, and I thank you all for your comments. Later!!! Big Grin !

WITH HONESTY AND DIGNITY,

Adigun Azikiwe Polack
One of the Founders of “Aura Flow”
Continuing Developer of “Frantic Journey”
Current Developer of “Star Angelic Slugger”

Quote:I'm simply referring to the quality of the connection. A Tier 1 connection is sturdier than what an ISP can offer, but if all you need is an mbit or 1/2 an mbit, then yea, no need to really go out for hosting. But with hosting as cheap as it is in some places, you might be better off than hosting it yourself, considering you have to leave your computer on all the time (electric bill) and other connectvity issues.

Good points. Smile

One thing I like about running a server out of your own house though (which you can't get with a hosting company for obvious reasons) is that you can run other server programs on it at the same time. For example, I used to run a private Ragnarok Online server for a short time when I was trying to get some friends into the game. Plus I run that IRC server. I'm also working on a MMORPG engine and I now have a place to run a server program I make for it for beta testing.

All in all it really just depends on what you need. Wink

Yup true, for that you'd have to get a dedicated server in a datacenter that allows that kind of activity, since these are often the target of DDOS attacks.

When I ran the original revision of Nodtveidt Dot Com, it was a Windows 2000 IIS 5.0 server with a mere 160kbps upstream. I ran several other daemons as well, including Unreal IRCD and a number of custom daemons for various programs including my own messenger (Nodtveidt Dot Com Messenger). Hosting locally has some advantages, for sure...but hosting in a data center means you rarely have to worry about certain things such as connection speed (1gbps versus 160kbps is quite a difference). There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to both methods. I like hosting locally for the sheer amount of control you have over your network, but I also like having a dedicated server in a data center for the better hardware availability as well as the much larger connections. Quote:So you mean to say that if you wanna do a 2TB dump at unlimited bandwidth a month you can? Hook me up Tongue. There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. You will always be limited by the infrastructure.

It's simply calculus. As sitesize = smaller, chance of running out of bandwidth -> none. QBNZ is actually not too big, I'm fifth on my server, the largest site being for a famous New Zealand artist, who has over 100,000 hits a month easy. And she isn't copped for it either Wink

Oracle, you already admitted to me that you do not have unlimited bandwidth. Tongue You may not run out of bandwidth, but that does not equal unlimited. We will never run out of bandwidth where we are, but that doesn't mean it's unlimited either. See how this works? Big Grin

Yes, I know what you mean, all I'm saying is that "Never run out" is effectively the same as "unlimited" Wink

Like a million googleplexes may as well be infinity, when compared with the human population Smile

That would be the "associative infinite" method of reasoning Wink very clever Big Grin
