Smoking in the boys room
#11
Well, it's a matter of personal choice... I choose not to smoke, and I never have, and I don't think I ever will. My wife started to smoke but we managed to get her to quit pretty quickly. The only "easy" time to quit is right after you start, it seems. So, if you want to smoke, smoke, but don't blame the tobacco companies when you get sick from it... oh, and you might want to think about putting together your will.

It's just a matter of determination. You have to clench your fist, and vow, upon the life beating in your chest, that you will not have another smoke, come hell or high water!

If I can stop eating and lose 100 lbs this year(and I have), you can stop smoking. Tongue

(or just keep doing it, it's really your choice)

A couple of years ago I tried one cigarette.
Where's the pleasure in coughing and having your eyes get really teary?
I only tried it once after that.
My sister's boyfriend/husband was a heavy smoker. My sister gave him an ultimatum: quit smoking, or I won't move in with you. So he went (on our advice) to a traditional Chinese doctor, and he prescribed some packets of tea. Within a month, he was down to one pipe a month or so.

I've never smoked, and never will. What's the point of even trying something that's gonna make your life a misery in the long run?

My sister started smoking, cause she thought she was cool. But then when she realized it WASN'T, she couldn't stop. She told my family and I that she quit, but then, late at night, when I was "asleep" and one of her friends was over, they went outside. But before they did, my sister said: "I got the smokes if you got the light." For some reason that statement stuck with me, even though it was like four years ago. Now my sister doesn't smoke very often, but she still does. I will never start smoking because I know kids in school that do, and all their friends also smoke. Along with smoking cigs, they also smoke reefer, and that's not something I want to ever be a part of either. So, now you know about my sister.

Bluffer, havent the doctors where you live told you about withdrawal symptoms? I will share my 'limited' knowledge with you. As rightly stated by many, cigarettes contain Nicotine. Its an alkaloid - a drug to which you get addicted. When you start off smoking you are exposed to small levels of it. As you continue smoking you become dependent(addicted to it). Your body demands higher and higher levels of the drug. So you smoke even more.

Now lets say you want to quit. So you slowly start reducing the no. of cigarettes. You shouldn't just stop smoking all together one day - if you are a heavy smoker. The cold sweats, tingling in the hands and feet, Intestinal disorders (cramps, nausea), headache, Insomnia, Mental confusion, Vagueness, Irritability, Anxiety, temper tantrums, intense needs, feelings of dependency, a state of near paralysis. All are the withdrawal symptoms of smoking. Every single withdrawal symptom will be extremely intense if you just stop smoking. Thus, the need to slowly wean yourself off it.

You get many 'medications' in the form of gum. You need to chew the gums for a period of say a month to 6 months to a year or even more. It depends on your body's dependency of nicotine. These gums contain certain quantities of nicotine. As you start chewing the gums for the first few days/weeks the quantities are high. THen you move on to gum containing lower quantities and so on until you start chewing nicotine free gum.

All through out this 'therapy' you need to be mentally strong and have good will power otherwise it will fail.

As for me. I am 19 and I havent ever smoked, done drugs, or alcohol(did i spell that right?), chewed tobacco. Basically the only vices i have is food, computers and *girls*.

My advice to everyone is never give in to peer pressure - its the worst thing that can happen to you. Don't 'try' drugs/smoking/drinking etc... Its a proven fact that they will kill you. So dont try to disprove it, many tried and regretted it. If you still dont believe me then just go to a cancer hospital and have a look at the patients or just open up a good medical(college) book with lots of illustrations. Always use good judgement and discretion and you will be safe =).

Smoking's not gonna be a problem for me. I'm a martial artist, so I keep away from that kind of stuff. Half the people I know that smoke say they hate it anyway, so I don't know why they bother.

I don't know how being a martial artist prevents anyone from smoking, especially since many of the ancient Japanese masters smoked. Big Grin But I see yer point, Rock Smile I too am a martial artist, although no longer practicing or studying, but it has nothing to do with the fact that I also have never smoked and never will. And people can keep their drugs and alcohol too. Sorry, the only drug I need is caffeine! Big Grin

People like James Dean who personified the "cool" illusion of smoking set the standards. But it's just that...an illusion. Back then, no one knew how destructive it is. We know better nowadays, and nowadays there's no real excuse for anyone to start unless they really do not love themselves or the people around them. I've dated several women who smoked, and I must say that it can be very difficult to be intimate with someone who smokes if you are a non-smoker.
I'd knock on wood, but my desk is particle board.
