My computer broke down
#81
WinXP is a resource hogging crap with several vulnerabilities. Not everyone has a DSL connection to download several patches and update their virus scanners on a daily basis . Though I did like it that it wouldnt crash as often as WinME. But still it has too many security holes.

A genuine question: M$ messed up when they released Win 98 and then they patched up the whole OS and released Win 98SE. Has M$ released or has plans to release a WinXP SE with all the previous 'holes' patched up? Longhorn is due in 2006 so uptil then XP remains their flagship OS.

Quote:I get frustrated when I finish a fresh install of Windows(ME) and when it boots up for the first time it gives me a "Windows protection error: Please reinstall" BSOD.
I've never seen that error, and I've installed all versions of Windows multiple times on countless computers. I've also never heard of that error. A Windows protection error never requires a reinstall.

Quote:I get frustrated when for no reason at all windows hangs at boot up.
Check the services it's starting, one's probably not working. Easy to fix.

Quote:I get frustrated when for no reason at all windows simply refuses to detect my NIC when I reboot my PC(after it gets bloated ofcourse).
9x has always been a dick about networking. Always.

Quote:I get frustrated when for no reason at all it says "winword.exe" has performed an illegal function and will be terminated and I lose the past hours worth of work and more frustrated when my father/mother lose their work and Word says "Autorecovery file is corrupt!"
If you were smart, you'd save your document frequently and not rely on "autorecovery" crap.

Quote:I get frustrated when windows updates cause errors in Java scripts and IE keeps popping up errors "blah blah hasnt been defined in blah...." and I cant click hotmail's send button because every time i go over the button it pops up that error!
Update your IE, turn off error notifications. Solved. Also, stop using that Hotmail garbage and get a real email account.

Quote:I get frustrated when windows becomes bloated after a few hours and a 2.8GHz machine works like a 2.8Hz machine!!!1111
Stop using 9x versions. You obviously know littoe to nothing about configuring them for optimum performance.

Quote:I get frustrated when windows says "Insufficient memory to execute this program" after I have terminated almost all programs in the taskbar and nothing else remains to be terminated.
Defrag the RAM. Increase your virtual memory. Either one will fix the problem.

Quote:I get frustrated when Windows just terminates Nero when I am burning a CD.
Buy Nero rather than using your illegally-downloaded-from-Kazaa cracked version.

Quote:I get frustrated when windows just decides to hang while shutting down.
You've got (a) frozen process(es). Use PS or PView95 to kill them off.

Quote:I get frustrated when the retarded scandisk runs and the screen saver interferes with it and finally after 10 attempts it gives an error that it has restarted 10 times......
Manage your virtual memory better. And anyone worth their salt knows to disable screensavers when running Scandisk or Defrag. It's common sense.

Quote:I can give you many of the "I get frustrated when windows..." sentences.
I can give you twice as many "I get frustrated when Linux..." sentences but I don't have that kind of time.

Quote:I have struggled to work my way around Linux but I prefer the struggle over the stability of Linux. Linux is stable as a rock!
I can crash Linux seven ways till Sunday, as I already outlined to you a few months ago. An OS is only as stable as its user.

Quote:So dont form opinions about me because you dont know me . Thats a fatal mistake that many have made :rotfl:
Opinions are like assholes: everyone's got one and they all stink. Big Grin

I have a number of programs that optimize 9x to the point of maximum stability. Cacheman, Tweak UI, MemTurbo, and more. Take complete control over your virtual memory, fix its size, optimize cacheing, keep your RAM under control, disable/remove known troublesome programs, etc (for example: removing IE from the shell will cut out 95% of all explorer-related crash problems, with one exception being the dreaded large file task copy freeze problem). It's one thing to know how to use Windows...it's another to know how to control Windows.
I'd knock on wood, but my desk is particle board.

what did you do to hurt your win ME config so much? i ran ME for 7 1/2 months with no problems until i bought win2k.

Linux isn't great. i couldn't even get my video drivers installed. it's confusing as hell. it's stable, but everything works great if it's used right. take those olean (or whatever they are) chips. if you ate the right serving size, there were no problems. you eat too much, youre gonna be running for the bathroom more than a few times. stability is no great acomplishment. if you hate ME so much, get an NT os instead. i ran .net server 2003 when Microsoft was doing that beta. it was pretty nice. maybe you should look into that. The point is that until an OS is perfect for everyone, which will never happen, don't pass judgement on any of them.

Doesn't mean it doesnt exist.

Already did. It doesnt freeze everytime I start windows. I just press the restart button. It may/may not freeze.

The errors started after I updated IE! It's not just hotmail. Any page with JS gives similar errors.

My life wasnt much better when I briefly tried out XP.

Quote:Defrag the RAM. Increase your virtual memory. Either one will fix the problem.
I already use RAM Booster. Thats one of my taskbar proggies =P.

Dude, not everyone uses Kazaa. I got the version of Nero with my Samsung Burner. I use non-pirated and genuine versions of WinME and Microsoft Office and other softwares I use.

Doesnt happen always.

Quote:...And anyone worth their salt knows to disable screensavers when running Scandisk or Defrag. It's common sense.
Cant do that when windows says "Improper shutdown detected" and starts scanning my HDDs.

Quote:I can give you twice as many "I get frustrated when Linux..." sentences but I don't have that kind of time.
Yeah I know. I too get frustrated many times but thats because I dont follow simple instructions!

Lets see you do that without a root password or a root disk to boot from.

Quote:and the Windows 98 that had been working for two years in my 233 MMX. That's a hardware change: take your hard disk and put in another computer. Did I have to reinstall? No.
Quote:I think you didnt guage the meaning of hardware changes. How about several different types of motherboards from several different manufacturers?
Thats exactly what i did, and uh, my windows 98 isnt to stable at the moment. Some games crash when loading, and my system either doesnt shut down, or every task gives an error and then it shuts down. However it performs quite well considering:

A)i have different printer drivers installled under the same name(this caused some issues)
B)This is a HP special version of win98, and im running it under a brand new computer and hardware its never seen before
C)Its on a slow old harddrive that has more stuff on it then youd think you could pack on a 6GB drive
D)Networking works fine
E)I havnt formated/re-installed in 2+ Years
F)Im too lazy to format

SP2 Beta is available for download. SP2 final should be available soon. I hear it has an intregrated anti-virus for clueless users.

Ive actually had no real problems with Winxp, i uninstall -resintall, got spyware, did this did that, smashed the reset button, and it works very well. And ever since i upgraded ram from 256 to 384 it began to run like a dream, heck even games ran better, maybe ut2003 is playable now! (if i had the hd space)
