EDIT: I just realized i have 3 firewalls...

Its a reality =(. As Nek said the softwares are too expensive to be bought by individuals. Besides why would someone buy genuine software when they can get pirated ones for free =P.

Though I have licensed versions of WinME and Ms.Office and some other softwares. I cant afford to buy softwares at the pace they come out.

Besides I use (*cautiously*) Linux (<-- I am in no way converting you or even remotely suggesting you to use Linux) and I am happy with the built in firewall. Its a good feeling to know that you are immune to viruses :bounce:

Linux viruses are virtually impossible to write because to do any real damage, you need root access. Most people who use Linux are smart enough to know you don't do your day-to-day activities as root, and most IRC servers will kick your ass off if you're root. That's what makes the Windows crowd so vulnerable...most computer users do not know much if anything about computer security, so they have no problem, for example, running Windows XP unprotected in a full rights access mode. But even using a limited account sometimes isn't enough...a rare few exploits can perform operations that require Administrator privledges even if you're logged in as a Limited user. We see it at college a lot, because there are so many computer illiterate morons at college.

Windows XP gives a false sense of security (because it's based on the NT kernel). Want to secure Windows XP? Create a limited account for yourself, properly configure your firewall, and in general, don't be an uneducated dipshit when you surf the WWW.

On the other hand, Linux also gives a false sense of security. It's only stable and secure when configured properly, just like Windows XP. I can't tell you how many Linux boxes I've had fun with over the years because their "l33t phr33k" owners had no idea how to secure them.
I'd knock on wood, but my desk is particle board.

I know =P. I once thought my Linux box was hacked :rotfl:. But it was the dumb irc program which was putting my Linux login username as the some parameter in the IRC chat room. So when people used to run a IP look up on me they used to come to know my login name =P.

You should have used a proper IRC client, such as KVirc. Big Grin

(as a side note, KVirc will test you to see just how much you know about Linux)
