New computer
#51
Quote:Well, with my 400 Mhz memory I can play high end games that were released yesterday. And my computer is 1 year old.

Hence my point: If you want a Pentium IV to perform better than an AMD you have to buy 800 Mhz memory and 800 Mhz FSB mobo which are really much more expensive. And the performance increase is unnoticeable. You better go with your Athlon XP, your nice cheaper mobo and spend $150 to $200 less, which you can use to buy a killer video card, far more important.

There isnt any 800MHz memory module available. The max is DDR400 @ 400MHz. DDR500 modules are available too but they are rare.

Z!re: Have you even tried playing NFS HP2, UT2004, Everquest, Enter The Matrix? They have high system requirements. Enter the Matrix has the highest. Try running it on your computer which is impossible unless you have a minimum of 256MB VRAM that too DDR.

Do you even know what is the difference between "Minimum" and "Recommended" system requirements? Minimum means the game will barely run and I mean *barely* and barely means their game will initialize not necessarily give you the minimum 24FPS.

The recommended system requirements mean the game will run with the minimum 24FPS.

Dont argue over it because I have had a PIII450MHz for the past 4 years and I know when it says PII300MHz, 32MB AGP Card, 64MB RAM as minimum system requirements and the game doesnt run properly on a PIII 450MHz, 64MB ATi Radeon, 192MB RAM. Dont start imagining that I am running norton AV in the background. I know how to use a PC. I have been at it for the past decade.

Cost IS a major factor and I am the first person to think about it and that is why I asked Redmarvin about his budget. I got my computer upgraded - Processor + Mobo + 512MB RAM for $322 and if you convert that into my currency(about 45 times) then thats a heck lot of money for me. Throw in a good video card and you would have a very good intel system. AMD may be cheaper but it doesnt *deliver*. I have seen my friends with AMD systems cursing themselves for buying them just because they were cheap.

Dont you think that a reputed company like Intel which has a lot *more* experience in making processors than AMD would go around cheating people? If they are cheating with their 'terrible' processors and their 'terrible' motherboards, would people keep on buying them? Let me tell you something, when people come to know about a product which is better and CHEAPER they grab it with open hands and this is a really really fast process however big the brand name may be, people will abandon it. That is a law of economics. But why isnt that happening? Why doesnt AMD hold the major slice of the processor market? May be, just may be their processors arent fast enough or good enough or CHEAP enough to compete with Intel's processors.

Do you even remotely have any idea what configuration my schools/university's computers have? You DONT, so STOP imagining things.

And before you start googling for the system requirements of the games I mentioned, in the previous part of my post, you should rethink which of those games your computer can run properly.

As a side note, I think you should really know how to argue. Scoffing at another person's arguement is the worst mistake you make. If you were to be in a remotely professional debate you would be kicked out because of your remarks. And this isnt my first observation.

I am not going to continue this useless argument further. Redmarvin has brains and I am sure he will go in for whatever suits him best.

Redmarvin: My advice is to go with this Intel system. It will serve you well for many years:
Intel Pentium 4/ 2.8C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512K Cache, Hyper Threading Technology - Retail (comes with a fan and heatsink)
Intel i865PE Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 CPU, Model "D865PERL" -RETAIL
ATI RADEON 9200 Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, TV-Out, 8X AGP -RETAIL
Kingston ValueRAM 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-3200 (x2 = 512MB)
LG Electronics Beige 52x32x52 CD-RW Drive, Model GCE-8525B(I), Retail
ANTEC Solution Series Beige Mini Tower Case with 300W Power Supply, Model "SLK1600" -RETAIL

This system will cost you $553. Less than the AMD system you are proposing without the XP OS but with a case.

The strong points of my configuration are:

1. The mobo i.e. 865PE mobos are very feature rich, Supports 800MHz(FSB) processors( the one i have selected ) and DDR400 memory as opposed to the 266/333MHz memory of the Epox mobo. 4 DIMM slots as opposed to the 3 DIMM slots, dual ddr operation, SATA RAID, 4PCI slots, lan, wlan, sound, and so on...The strongest point being, it is manufactured by Intel.

2. The ATi Radeon card - definitely better than the FX5200. You can play even the very high end games because your processor will compensate for it.

3. The processor - 134MHz more than double the AMD processor's FSB(800 = 2 * 333 + 134), with HT, runs cooler and 2.8 GHz as opposed to the overrated 2700+ AMD Processor.(Remember just the GHz dont count but the FSB, i/o memory mode, processor to memory bandwidth etc... also count). You can run the AMD processors along with Dual channel ddr but they wont give you even 5% increase in performance. Also, the intel retail boxed version comes with a CPU fan and a Heatsink which isnt a part of the AMD boxed set.

4. The RAM - PC3200(a.k.a DDR400) as opposed to PC2700 or DDR333
Also, you can configure it for dual channel DDR operation which will give you even better performance. IMO there is about 30-40% increase in performance(my own experience is about 40%) with the dual channel ddr operation with the intel processors *only*

You can cross check the prices. These are international prices. I dont think they would be costlier in sweden =P.

Edit: I checked the prices at the same place(newegg.com) and found out the system proposed by redmarvin would cost $601(excluding WinXP and including the antec case).

you know Tbbq, your attitude of late has really sucked. You have this thing of "I am the computer god cuz I know all cuz i use linux and intel ht and that makes me so uberl33t!!!111" which really irritates the f**k out of people. You have no idea how many people you piss off with that jackass attitude of yours. Sit back and reflect, before you push everyone away.

If you take a good look at Intel's history, you'll find it riddled with scams, ripoffs, and errors. Remember the 486SX? How about FDIV? And let's not forget the wonderful first-generation P4s.

The 486SX was crippled on purpose so people would upgrade to the 486DX, hence buying two processors, making Intel more money. The FDIV error was a result of Intel being idiots and trying to shove a new processor out the door before actually making sure it had all of its bugs ironed out. And the glorious Pentium 4...oh what a work of art this one was...the scam to end all scams. A horribly crippled processor that sold at two to three times the cost of an Athlon of the same clock speed but performed at two to three times LESS than the Athlon. But people bought it up anyways because hey, it's Intel.

Intel, like Microsoft, is a household name. They don't care if they release products with errors and flaws, they sell based on their name alone. They know damn well that the general populace is ignorant and will buy up their products because it says Intel on them. This allows them plenty of freedom to cut corners, scam the consumer, and just generally commit hundreds of industry no-nos...and get away with it every step of the way. And believe me...they sure do take full advantage of that freedom to screw you over seven ways till Sunday.

As far as your conclusive study on laws of economics (*cough*), take it from someone who actually HAS years of experience in this industry...the normal laws of economics do not apply to the computer industry. Why? Because even after all these years, computers are still rather taboo and knowledge of how it all works is still very rare. Everyone and their grandmother insists they are a computer expert because they can change the wallpaper and install AOL Instant Messenger...without being on AOL!!!!!!1111 Microsoft's introduction of 32-bit Windows was a double-edged sword...it allowed more people to use computers, but it also kept them in the dark...and before you knew it, you had a whole legion of dumbasses behind the keyboard, thinking they were hot sh1t, going into chatrooms on AOL claiming to be the ub3rl33t0rz because they vaguely knew the difference between a BMP and a JPG. Computer users are no more intelligent now then they were back then...in fact, it's getting worse because the industry exploded and people are easily led due to the confusion of this fast-growing industry. So if they see an Intel commercial on TV, they immediately believe that Intel is the only way to go and they rush out and buy whatever it is they've been fed. The laws of economics do not apply...the laws of MARKETING do.

As far as your schools computers go...get real. Your school bought the cheapest computers they could get their hands on. And I have a feeling that these mystery friends you talk about who curse their cheapness probably went all the way cheap and bought everything subpar. Hence...they got what they paid for...a pile of shyte. Like you, they need to educate themselves a bit more.

Your comment about the motherboard being made by Intel is irrefutable proof that you're in bed with Intel. I find that strange considering how much of a Linux freak you are. Most Intel sheep are also Microsoft sheep...hrm, weird...

Man, you know that I am talking about RIMM dual channel memory. Don't be a senseless nitpicker.

And yeah, man, Intel mobos were nice for 486DX4s, but they are a complete bag of shit nowadays. Get an Asus or a Gigabyte, man.

I will end up this discussion now. Like in the Linux discussion, you seem to have a fixed wrong idea shoved in your mind. Like others said, that is really annoying, it is like trying to make a reasoning with a wall. If you are happy using linux in your mega fashion uber leet Intel Pentium IV with Hyper Threading and dual channel 800 Mhz FSB, you got the banana, man. If you have such an amount of money to spend, you lucky one. But keep in mind that not everyone likes to throw money out of the window.

Nice to spend 25% more on a sucky HT processor when you have to turn that feature off. Reasons already explained, so read back 'cause I think you don't read the posts as you keep going in circles.

That's enough. TBBQ's attitude may not be the best, but the rest of you drag yourselves below his level with comments like:

Quote:You have no idea how many people you piss off with that jackass attitude of yours.

Quote: Like you, they need to educate themselves a bit more.

Quote:Don't be a senseless nitpicker.

TBBQ: Stop trying to quote a small part of someone's post and rebuff it, just to speed the thread along.

And this:

Quote:That is sheer spam. Oracle, delete it immediately! =P :rotfl:

Is unacceptable. Admin decide what is unacceptable around here, and in my view, although that was a one liner, it made enough sense to me to understand that he meant to consider the last post and think of it in budget terms. In fact, even you understood, because you then posted an answer to that.

This topic is under symbolic lock.

Oracle, that "spam" post was meant to be a joke. Please notice the =P and the :rotfl: smilie. I never meant that Z!re's post was spam - it was well.....a one-worder =P. If you still have any objection then I will not make such a post in the future.

Others: I have nothing to say except Redmarvin asked for advice and he got a debate. My mistake was to compare Intel and AMD thus starting this dumb debate(when nathan played down HT). Next time I will see to it that I dont get into a debate when someone asks for simple advice

What don't you understand about "symbolic lock"?

That means, I've locked the damn topic, but there's no "locked" sign, alright? If you wish to persue any remaining points, you use PM.

And yes, I do have an objection to your post still. The smileys make it more pointless, not less agravating. So please do cut it out in the future.

If you have any issues, use PM like the rest of the forum members would.
