Quote:Well, with my 400 Mhz memory I can play high end games that were released yesterday. And my computer is 1 year old.
Hence my point: If you want a Pentium IV to perform better than an AMD you have to buy 800 Mhz memory and 800 Mhz FSB mobo which are really much more expensive. And the performance increase is unnoticeable. You better go with your Athlon XP, your nice cheaper mobo and spend $150 to $200 less, which you can use to buy a killer video card, far more important.
There isnt any 800MHz memory module available. The max is DDR400 @ 400MHz. DDR500 modules are available too but they are rare.
Z!re: Have you even tried playing NFS HP2, UT2004, Everquest, Enter The Matrix? They have high system requirements. Enter the Matrix has the highest. Try running it on your computer which is impossible unless you have a minimum of 256MB VRAM that too DDR.
Do you even know what is the difference between "Minimum" and "Recommended" system requirements? Minimum means the game will barely run and I mean *barely* and barely means their game will initialize not necessarily give you the minimum 24FPS.
The recommended system requirements mean the game will run with the minimum 24FPS.
Dont argue over it because I have had a PIII450MHz for the past 4 years and I know when it says PII300MHz, 32MB AGP Card, 64MB RAM as minimum system requirements and the game doesnt run properly on a PIII 450MHz, 64MB ATi Radeon, 192MB RAM. Dont start imagining that I am running norton AV in the background. I know how to use a PC. I have been at it for the past decade.
Cost IS a major factor and I am the first person to think about it and that is why I asked Redmarvin about his budget. I got my computer upgraded - Processor + Mobo + 512MB RAM for $322 and if you convert that into my currency(about 45 times) then thats a heck lot of money for me. Throw in a good video card and you would have a very good intel system. AMD may be cheaper but it doesnt *deliver*. I have seen my friends with AMD systems cursing themselves for buying them just because they were cheap.
Dont you think that a reputed company like Intel which has a lot *more* experience in making processors than AMD would go around cheating people? If they are cheating with their 'terrible' processors and their 'terrible' motherboards, would people keep on buying them? Let me tell you something, when people come to know about a product which is better and CHEAPER they grab it with open hands and this is a really really fast process however big the brand name may be, people will abandon it. That is a law of economics. But why isnt that happening? Why doesnt AMD hold the major slice of the processor market? May be, just may be their processors arent fast enough or good enough or CHEAP enough to compete with Intel's processors.
Do you even remotely have any idea what configuration my schools/university's computers have? You DONT, so STOP imagining things.
And before you start googling for the system requirements of the games I mentioned, in the previous part of my post, you should rethink which of those games your computer can run properly.
As a side note, I think you should really know how to argue. Scoffing at another person's arguement is the worst mistake you make. If you were to be in a remotely professional debate you would be kicked out because of your remarks. And this isnt my first observation.
I am not going to continue this useless argument further. Redmarvin has brains and I am sure he will go in for whatever suits him best.
Redmarvin: My advice is to go with this Intel system. It will serve you well for many years:
Intel Pentium 4/ 2.8C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512K Cache, Hyper Threading Technology - Retail (comes with a fan and heatsink)
Intel i865PE Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 CPU, Model "D865PERL" -RETAIL
ATI RADEON 9200 Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, TV-Out, 8X AGP -RETAIL
Kingston ValueRAM 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-3200 (x2 = 512MB)
LG Electronics Beige 52x32x52 CD-RW Drive, Model GCE-8525B(I), Retail
ANTEC Solution Series Beige Mini Tower Case with 300W Power Supply, Model "SLK1600" -RETAIL
This system will cost you $553. Less than the AMD system you are proposing without the XP OS but with a case.
The strong points of my configuration are:
1. The mobo i.e. 865PE mobos are very feature rich, Supports 800MHz(FSB) processors( the one i have selected ) and DDR400 memory as opposed to the 266/333MHz memory of the Epox mobo. 4 DIMM slots as opposed to the 3 DIMM slots, dual ddr operation, SATA RAID, 4PCI slots, lan, wlan, sound, and so on...The strongest point being, it is manufactured by Intel.
2. The ATi Radeon card - definitely better than the FX5200. You can play even the very high end games because your processor will compensate for it.
3. The processor - 134MHz more than double the AMD processor's FSB(800 = 2 * 333 + 134), with HT, runs cooler and 2.8 GHz as opposed to the overrated 2700+ AMD Processor.(Remember just the GHz dont count but the FSB, i/o memory mode, processor to memory bandwidth etc... also count). You can run the AMD processors along with Dual channel ddr but they wont give you even 5% increase in performance. Also, the intel retail boxed version comes with a CPU fan and a Heatsink which isnt a part of the AMD boxed set.
4. The RAM - PC3200(a.k.a DDR400) as opposed to PC2700 or DDR333
Also, you can configure it for dual channel DDR operation which will give you even better performance. IMO there is about 30-40% increase in performance(my own experience is about 40%) with the dual channel ddr operation with the intel processors *only*
You can cross check the prices. These are international prices. I dont think they would be costlier in sweden =P.
Edit: I checked the prices at the same place(newegg.com) and found out the system proposed by redmarvin would cost $601(excluding WinXP and including the antec case).
