For the guitarists out there...
#21
Hey,

Binary: Nice licks. Although personally this kind of playing now bores me...I found Flamenco and well, once you find Spanish music you just cannot go back. Paco is my god.

Whoever said they wish they could be good: Listen, don't overdo on the practice. Flamenco guitarists that use their fingers alot are prone to very very dangerous wrist disorders. Even standard guitarists are prone to this.

There are some golden rules to follow:

1. When it begins to hurt anywhere while playing, STOP.
2. Although it may look 'cool' to have your guitar low enough to piss over, I can guarantee you Slash is not normally shaped. It is NOT good for you...your wrists die. I believe Slash has a wrist problem.
3. Never ever not warm up. You think it's stupid to stretch? I spent 20 minutes doing practice exercises just to warm up, even if that means I'll play for only 10 minutes after that.
4. Everybody has been where you are. You can only become better. Complicated music is not necessarily good music. If a song you have written your heart out to just is basically G C D, then fuck everyone, it's what you want.

Heheh, i will never listen to that one. I feel i get the most out of my guitar playing when i'm in pain. Hell, i make my fingers bleed on a monthly basis. and i would also like to announce this here: I have just completed a 26 minute solo and had to put my hand in some ice and wrap fingers cause they were bleeding so much (it was a steady 6/8 time solo through and through). keep in mind, i hadn't replaced the strings and they were still a little rusty (w00t, tetnis shot!).

Oh ok, well I guess I'm wrong then :o

Dude, its not cool to get wrist disorders, that when fixed leave you invalid for life, without ever being able to play guitar again. Or tetanus...thats not really funny, I don't think. 26 minute solo, well done. Not a great accomplishment, try doing a Flamenco jam over a funk rhythm for 90 minutes at a party, while having drinks Tongue.

That was a good night.

One of the reasons I have problems with my left wrist, as well as one of the reasons I no longer play, is because of playing too much and doing it rather incorrectly. So I agree with aetherFox on this one, since I know what it's like to have that kind of pain that can easily lead to being debilitated for life. You have to know when and where to draw the line. (Oh, and I never stretched either...never thought of it, but if I had known about it at the time, I would have done it.)
I'd knock on wood, but my desk is particle board.

I never stretch either, and I curl my wrist when playing some songs. (Such as songs when you have to play the E and A string at seperate times) Tho it hasn't caused me any pain yet, this how my guitar teacher(who was tought improperly) got hurt. He was curling his wrist while playing for years, and eventually he hurt his wrist badly and couldnt play for a while, and then reteach himself the correct way.

anywayz, no i didn't get anything from fretboard logic (never even been there honestly), as all of those things came directly from my mind, if i use anything from any1 i either twist it up and add my own style to it and credit the original artist, i'm good enuff to not have to steal riffs and licks and consider that a great insult.

I always start with at least 15-20 minutes of finger stretches and always play as relaxed as possible, having the guitar to low is pointless and just makes playing even harder, i can't stick to 1 kind of style that's just stupid a good guitarist should listen and play all styles, because any style can be incorperated into another in some form. i play everything from metal to blues and jazz, classical southern rock, classic rock even some old country now and again, even som stuff kinda sounds spanish and maybe even a lil hawaiin now and again, maybe i'm just a wierd creative f*** but anywayz..... i've played at partys on almost every form of a illegal and or legal substance, and still played fluently... and generally only play about 4 hours per day now.. sometimes with a few day break inbetween to get the creative juices back.

Cool start to a heavy metal solo, I came up with in a few minutes,
Intended for the intermediate to advanced player.
I have no clue what's going on as far as scales and theory as I just don't care.

You can start the solo using sweep (economy) picking for blazing speed, I however, palm mute the notes on the G string, left off the pm slightly for the B and left totally for the E, it gives the lick a very cool sound.

This should get your fingers moving, good luck and remember have fun!

Tab Legend:

^?? - bend note until it reaches the pitch of the following fret number
~ - strong vibrato
p - pull off
s - slide

E:---------17----------------19-----------------20----------21^23~~~-
B:-----15----15---------17-----17---------19-----19--------------------
G:-14------------14s15-------------15s17-------------17---------------

23rd fret? Big Grin man, I don't have an Ibanez Wink

As for techniques, I don't follow any. My hands position (as it happens to me when playing keyboards) is weird, 'cause I learned by myself. And I have to say that I don't get pain nor damage, so I think my hands position is what I found to be natural.

Most techniques teach about placing your thumb in the mid point of your guitar neck, but I don't do it. I use my thumb a lot for many things, so I need to hang the guitar differently:
