Freebasic shop and/or donations
#21
Why couldn't Vic look for local support?

What's to stop him from asking people he works with (at work) to try it out?

Showcase it for some local businesses (geek effect), show them what FreeBasic can do for them.

As for annual meetsings and getting drunk and all: that sounds like a great idea with one huge "but". From what I can tell, about half of us are in Brazil, half are in America, and about a third are scattered around the Germanic parts of Europe. While it's quite possible for everyone in the Americas to travel by [economical] car (Cancun meeting, anyone?) I'm sure our European friends might have certain issues involving a certain Atlantic ocean (which, as I recall, doesn't play nicely with terrestrial vehicles)

Not really, but ok Big Grin

I still think he should look into getting some sponsoring from a local compuer company/tech company...

Or just some random shop... whatever goes...

Call around to the different companies, asking them.. etc etc etc

Lol. 1 half + 1 half + 1 third = 1.33 Wink and, AFAIK, only V1ctor is from Brazil. But if he makes "half of us", then I'm fine Wink

Germanic parts of Europe? define that. To me, the only germanic part of Europe is Germany Tongue

One problem with this kind of project is that it's mainly a solo project. There is no design or conceptual documents that can help another people to really help on FB development. Of course there are the sources, but it's difficult to get the general idea only by reading the codes. I can understand v1c; he is busy enough making the real thing to put more hours writing those documents.
(I'am talking about the compiler, not the libraries)

Actually, there are plenty of ways to pay the bills Vic. Here is a little rundown:

1) Once you've developed a proper website (my offer still stands) then put google's adsense technology on it, and you'll get paid an undisclosed amount for each click you recieve. NOw while it is illegal to say 'click the banner' I'd be happy to take the hint and click till my fingers bleed.

2) Many online shops will take images and stick them on mugs, shirts mousepads etc for you, and will even set up a shop. As far as I understand it, it is basically just that you pay them a certain percentage of what you make. Someone mentioned about profit...well Break Even cost is 0 so... Big Grin

3) There are other places where you can set up donation services. PayPal also doesn't support UAE, which makes life real difficult for me, but I am sure there are other places. Give google a whirl...

4) Now that your compiler is maturing under Linux, you could introduce it to the linux community. As far as I know, its the first proper BASIC derivative for Linux, and that's a pretty big thing. With it's power, it will make dev on linux a breeze and I am sure you would get some pretty bright limelight.

My spidey sense was tingling so I decided to check this site, lo and behold, this thread.

One thing the community needs to keep in mind is that Brazil is not a fully industrialized nation. The rich industralized south-east has an average income of less than four thousand dollars per year, and the less developed north-east has an average income of less than two thousand dollars per year.

I'm in no position to be donating much (since I'm not living off of much more than that myself -- stupid poor student status!), I don't think it's a stretch to say that among the QB Community which has more than a few professionals in it(and definitely enough people who could pull together some cash!), we should be able to get together 4000 dollars, or about 350 dollars per month, to keep the one who has made sacrifices and changed the community completely in the position to do so!

Vic, if my numbers about Brazil's incomes are inaccurate, be sure to say so, but after everything, even I could make some sacrifices and pull some cash together to keep development on schedule. Time, however, is of the essence, so if people want to donate somehow, a system should be in place quickly, no? Smile

that's talking!! SJ Zero

the first and biggest problem is how to get the money from say 'paypal' to vic?.... is there a service in Brazil that can do this..?

if not maybe a good biz for someone to start :bounce:

If v1ctor is supported by the users, who will decide about what he does?

V!ctor should keep developing the compiler, a task in which he excels...

They money would be voluntary, sort of a "thanks for kicking so much ass and making FB! you rock!" -gift

If I send/give money v1c should do whatever he wants with them..

If he wants to spend it on beer and pizza, fine.. if he wants to buy a macintosh.. fine Big Grin

Also, I think the idea about having a "Donators" page on freebasic.net is a good idea... not how much each person/company has donated, just the name...
