You wouldn't believe how many pixel artists use paint, and just paint, for their art. Head over to pixellation and ask how many of the great artists there use it; you'll be surprised. You really don't NEED anything more than what paint offers to do good pixel art.

Yeah paint is what I use. Z!re, your style isn't what I'm trying to match lol. Personally I like to make more cartoonie graphics. I added some more brown and colors to the grass I think it looks better now.

Quote:Actually... You don't need lots of colors for a grass tile. To reference Tsugmo's tutorial, Seiken Densetsu 3 used 3 colors for its grass. It's just how you use them... Using too many colors in such a small tile almost always results in it looking horribly cluttered.
A great artist can go both ways.

Ya, it was just an example Big Grin

But try using less colors, and not any that sticks out... such as the bright green

I tried but it seems best the way it is. Unless you can make a suitable modification I don't think I'll be changing it. :-P

I think I'll try some water now. It used to be my specialty but I havn't made any in awhile. I'll post an update later tonight or tomorrow, got lots of homework. ;-)

I was being sarcastic Tongue

Just the way Z!re said "Yes... mspaint"

Indeed mspaint is very good for pixel art. Just not much else, I find.

btw, Gustav, I like the screenie a lot. The scheme is very easy on the eyes as Josiah said. I like the tree sprites as well. Well detailed.

Well, yes, but there's some things that can't be helped... A whole lot of colors is fine for a tile if it's done in, say, photoshop, or actually an edited picture, but from my experience and what I've learned along the way from various other examples, too many colors in a hand-pixelled tile of small proportions = too cluttered and busy = distracting to the player = defeating the purpose of a grass tile (a typical grass tile that is), which is to actually look like grass while not drawing the player's attention away from the more important graphical aspects.
Well that's my view.
EDIT: You may want to have several grass tiles with variations; maybe use the one you have up there in the original image as the standard one and use the version with a bit of brown as a variation to break up the monotony. Usually I like to have at least three different grass/base ground/whatever tiles in any given set (usually more depending on the eviroment I'm doing) but that's in no way a requirment.

Quote:Thanks for the critisim but the reason I made the bright grass tile is to make it stand out more, look taller. I'll be making more tiles for it so its less repetative though. I only wanted critisim on the individual tiles. ;-)

I know. :-P After I finish my water tile I'll be doing that.

If you have ever played Animal Crossing, you will know good tree graphics are a must if trees are common, the trees in AC (animal crossing) are 2D whilst the rest of the game is 3D, that annoys me greatly, also you do not want the grass to stand out, on AC in the winter, i cannot stop looking at the stars drawn in the snow, an annoying distraction, in short:

It is hard to find a good balance between good graphics and destracting
graphics.

Am I the only one that thinks there's something odd with that post? (talking to yourself, eh? Wink)
