The Impossible Challenge: Are you up to it?
#21
there is a game called spores coming out on the pc, it has a learning and growing enviroment done using maths, that is AI as the computer learns how everything would work in reality,

hmmm...wow. Could it really be done? :o

FYI:
My philosophy was always:
Everything is possible, even if its not. What we regard as impossible could be possible. Ex. I believe at one time flight was considered impossible, but yet we fly. Sometime possiblilties illude us.

True AI? Meh probably..... as said before the 'self awareness' aspect would probably have to be hardware related, unless someone finds a mathmatical approach. But even then (also said before) it would require quite a bit of proccessing power. The adaption aspect I can answer by saying 'Spore'.
But that brings up an interesting point.... could something adapt to the point of self awareness? or maybe the AI is just thinking along and it developes a method of self awareness.

how about this? create a computer that's sole purpose is adapting and learning. give it the neccisary inputs (like humans have, ie: eyes (camera), ears(microphone), mouth(speakers))
then put certain safeguards in place so it doens't destroy itself. you have the inputs automatically send the data to the 'brain' (like in a human). The brain can't do much with it so it learns by expirience.

You can't really do somethign like that with the mouth though... but somethign similar can be thought up.

after awhile shouldn't it be able to learn a language, or understand math.

I have no clue if what I just said makes any sense... -_-

anyways,
as for my philosophy? read the Hitchhiker's Trilogy.

most theroys on human consciousness and self awarness are now jumping to the world of Quatom mechanics. internal structor in nerons are at the scale to be effected by quatom wirdness i.e. Quatom Tunneling and more dramatic effect of collapse of the wave function.

anyway the idea is Quatom effects are the reason were consciouse at all.

Well, most of these questions have been asked over the years. And no one knowes the answer, time will tell, then Terminators will take over the world and destroy human kind.....ok I'm better.

Anyways, people have different theories, and I think that we're not quallified enough to answer these questions. So well, here we stand. Big Grin

Smile How can we make a AI, when we don't even know how we work??

Who said that? We know quiet a lot about how we work last time I checked.

*Mit hits self in head*

Ok, I hope you did that on purpose wtiger.

We know how we work phsically, how we inherit genes, make proteins from RNA which were copied from DNA, how our cells function within themselves, how our cells fuctions together within organs, and how organs work in systems to make our body work.

He was talking about 1 of the greatest mysteries: the human brain. We only know that where the centers of specific funcions are located in the brain, but not our conscienceness how we think, how we have intellegence, etc. Tongue

Yeah I know but it's not like we know -nothing-.... You know what? I have no data to back up that statment. Nevermind *rolls eyes*

Even if no one else thinks that your challenge is feasable. I do. I think about the problem everyday. It can be done. Less than a century ago colour TV was impossible, less than 50 years ago, this website was impossible (unless of course you were a billionaire or a government agency). Less than 20 years ago, 3D gaming was impossible. All it takes is one person with the dedication to say, "Why the hell shouldn't I be able to do that!?!?!?!"

I will complete your challenge, in its original form, and with nothing more than my laptop and QBASIC.
