I can't seem to invite anybody to Gmail wander why? I see no INvite by the left toolbar or anything.

It's left Beta and now anyone can join.
Thus the invites are pretty useless.

No, it is still beta.
The invites are given out randomly, and you don't get them immediately. Wait for a while.
