Got my new computer
#21
my point was that for alienware your paying for the case, the service, and most importantly the name.

Theres no way a rig with a 9550se (shit edition) should be priced at more then 1000$. Absouletly none. And a dirt cheap computer for less then half of that will be able to compile with gcc at nearly the same speed that you wont notice the difference(unless your compiling something huge, but when allegro can compile in a minute on 500$ hardware, what exactly are you trying to compile).

I dont see any reason to buy an alienware. A little pricey is too soft. Go to newegg.com and build a better configuration to see what i mean.

Realistically, the best thing to do for a killer machine is to build it yourself. You alone know what you want to do with it, so you can choose all the hardware you want specifically for the task you want to use it for.

For example, back when I put together my Athlon XP 1800+ with Geforce 4MX460 video card featuring Video in and video out, 256MB of RAM, and a fast 60GB hard drive, and Asus Nforce motherboard(and therefore audio), that was my wonder system. Sure, others could put together better components, but there is still nothing I want to do that such a machine can't accomplish.

In direct comparison, my current Dell suffers from a sub-par hard drive and a pitiful video card, paired with a crippled Intel motherboard. Yes, it has a much faster processor(2.6Ghz P4 Celeron), and twice the RAM, but specs don't make a machine great, being useful does. Smile

Hmm... intel motherboard with integrated graphics... That's like a -100 points right there for the system. The fact that your using a celeron doesn't really help either... no offense. I got the same thing, except it's a pentium 4 1.8 ghz computer. It still kinda sucks though. When I have enough money, i'm going on a scavanger hunt through computer stores, ebay and more places to look for parts to build MY dream machine. Ah yes, I can dream...

Acer Aspire t300 modified:

Celeron 2.4GHz
256 RAM
40GB HD partitioned three ways
*Benq 48x16x48 CD Rewriter
*LG DVD ROM
Acer Mobo
SiS 650_740 gfx Chipset (monitor 2)
*GeForce4MX440se PCI (bought before this box was for my old box/it had no AGP slot, but this works ok) - monitor 1
Standard 104 internet keyboard
Optical Mouse.

It's sort of a base package, and I'll be upgrading soon.

Rating: 6/10. Seems kinda throttled. I'd love to "open it up" heaps.

>anarky - Just your average Celeron bottleneck.

SJ, you're absolutely right about onboard video. But its never meant to play Halo or Doom III. Thats the exact reason why I invested in a Radeon.
