Just to emphasize on what Jofers said, at one time hacking may have just gotten you a slap on the wrist. But now it is taken far more seriously. Just how seriously I don't remember off hand, but I do know they have gotten tougher over time. :wink:

Most people only get about 2-4 years, it seems: http://www.securitystats.com/crime.html. However, max sentencing still stands between 40-50 years. The sasser guy on trial right now faces up to 70.

I think the "like a parking ticket" analogy might be in reference to some clause that keeps popping up on google in the patriot act that legally allows a hacker to be convicted for life, but I doubt it's going to be used anytime soon. The White House has enough bad press as it is.

Why wouldn't they? If anyone asked, they'd just lie flat out like they always do. Frankly, I wouldn't be suprised if the pathetic "bad press" they do get is just a cover so people think the media ISN'T controlled by the whitehouse.
