Down with ClearType! I run at 1600x1200 on a 19" flat-tube CRT with no font smoothing and everything looks pretty as can be. If I turn ClearType on, it actually makes things harder to read, at least for me. To each his/her own, I guess...

Just because you have your CRT with its fuzzy dots for pixels. Its like hardware AAing. haha.

Oh, and I'm sure you get great refresh rates and clarity from your LCD when playing Doom 3...

This is pretty revealing. This is two shots of my LCD monitor, top is cleartype, bottom is regular antialiasing (it's of this thread, with the text enlarged so AA works on the bottom one). The first thing you'll notice is that Cleartype DOESNT ANTIALIAS, it's just TTF rendering using the RGB channels as sub-pixels (in a 32-bit mode it's as basic as laying down a byte), which is why it works at small fonts. So at low angles (the bottom of the D), it should look worse than AA. However, for high angle curves, like the "V", it looks much nicer than AA. Obviously, on a CRT monitor, it will looks like bad AA with a color haze, because the RGB beams are vertically stacked and blended together by the phosphor glow. So there IS a difference, it's NOT that performance-demanding, and whether or not you use it is YOUR preference.

Personally I do not like it and I don't want to bother with the performance hit regardless of how minimal it may be.
