Nathe, to disprove your point: gn = ñ (gnocchi changed spelling to ñoqui in spanish), english: gn like ni in onion.

Interestingly enough, that link points out that "Ñ - PoiGNant and caNYon. People pronounce "canyon" differently, but "poignant" is the best word to get the sound from. The sound we need is the gn sound."
