Buying a new computer
#21
Quote:[crusade]
I doubt it, as HP/Compaq uses substandard parts.
[/crusade]

I know, but you can't choose which substandard parts you want in your combo.

(maybe there have been a misunderstunding, I said NO BRAND = COMPAQ * 1.5 at the same price)

No, you can't, which is why you shouldn't buy Compaq but buy Sony..

You definitely didn't understand me.

I was saying NOT TO BUY A BRAND PC, not compaq nor hp nor sony nor dell nor whatever.

I was saying "get to the shop, ask for the best motherboard, the best micro, the best memory, the best HDD... and let them build a PC for you. That way you get better stuff for the same price.

Nathan, Whether you're right or wrong is not the issue. He has strongly said several times that he doesn't want to build a pc --- he wants to buy one ready made. Why don't we respect his wishes. It's his money. Let's give him some advice within those parameters.

Nathan's advice is fully within the parameters, Moneo. It's also the best thing to do if he wants specific parts, doesn't want to actually build the thing himself, and refuses to order from online stores.

As plasma said, I'm within his parameters. He will buy a built PC, just customized. It is the same as buying a Dell, but selecting the devices. At the end, he will have a new PC fully built but with 100% quality materials.

Maybe computer shops are different in your place, but here they always get the PC built for you, unless you tell them the contrary.

Quote:*note*I want to BUY a computer, not BUILD one*note*

don't mean to be rude, i just don't really have the time to build/learn to build a PC.

I know you said you don't want to order from an online store, and you don't want to build a computer by yourself, but it really isn't that hard to build a computer, and if you get it custom build, you'll get the best parts for your price, and if you go to the Fry's Electronics' Outpost website, there you can get all the parts you need delivered to your home with shipping options like competitive Ground, 2nd Day Air, and Overnight Delivery rates via Airborne Express are less expensive than most ground shipping rates, and plus you get a FREE ground shipping for all domestic orders over $500.

Btw, you can get a custom build system in a computer store (most computer stores do this), but this is just a suggestion, and you can't blame a person for trying. ;-)

...ok, this is exactly what im talking about. i simply wanted to know if you guys had any suggestions for a good p.c. you even qouted me about it! don't wan to build, dont want to buy from online. I don't care if all i had to do was plug the damn thing into the monitor, then into the wall, i "don't" want to build it, "don't". now, nobody take this personally, but whenever i start a topic, where i want as close to a straight forward answer as possible, you guys just argue with each other, or talk about other options that i have, well guess what...i know about these options, and i have considered them, and here are the reasons that i found when considering...

build pc:
1) i want someone liable for if it breaks
2) i don't wish to aquire this knowledge for it is tedious(no matter what you say)
3) parts break, and in the house i live in, they break alot.

buy online:
1) have no credit card, and father wont lend me his
2) set price, there is no reasoning with a web site
3) warranties are better if you buy from either manufacturer, or main hq.

there, now you made me feel bad. anywho, i am very sorry, you guy's arguing is what makes this forum unique, and what if i didn't consider all of the options, now i feel like a real a$$.

anyway, thanks alot for your input surge, i will have to reconsider, so, thanx. continue...

It is now. ;-)

Oh, a barebone system, sorry.

Quote:Not only that, but show the stores what their competitors are offering. Let them compete for your money; you'll be surprised at the results. ;-)
lol, afterall, what do they get paid for? ;-)

Quote:You also have set your standards much too high, and have too much money.
Dude, talk about me.. ;-)

Dude, you have "no" idea how many time HP's and Compaq's freeze! I tried zipping or unzipping a 300mb zip file (I think), and the HP with wme on it (of course.. - but windoz isn't the prob - it's the pc), it's about 800mhz (I think), and after about 30 seconds after starting windoz zip engine to compress/uncompress, it just FROZE - restart didn't even work (or did it - can't remember - was about 1.x years ago). Sony, Nec, ... are the best for a crash proof system.

I'm really sorry if I did, I really didn't mean to, but I just always like to suggest stuff, maybe next time I will need to consider what I type before I type.

MEC,
I have agreed with you from the start. I've been looking around at the sites of some major brands (IBM and HP/Compaq), and find 2 basic things that could be of interest to you:
1) They offer user-requested customized versions of many of their models.
2) They have what they call "Business Partners" like Radio Shack and Staples.

So, I think you can go to a Radio Shack, Staples or similar store and order a factory built pc that fits your requirements. The warranty will be from the name brand factory. You can negotiate price, especially since you going to pay cash.

You should get out there and start shopping around.
