How can I round the corners of an image...i.e. make an arc in each corner and make them transparent...

As far as I know you need to make a circle on black/white, get the inverse, cut and paste the corners onto your picture, then blur.

use the rounded rectangle shape tool, place it over your image, select it, invert selection and erase.

make a rectangular selection, go to selection in the drop-down menu (with file, edit, etc.), SMOOTH it (it's in one of the submenus with border, i think), and then hit ALT-BACKSPACE or CTRL-BACKSPACE to fill the selection with your foreground or background color (or save as channel or path or whatever)

that creates a solid figure, though
i thought he wanted to smooth the corners around an existing image, so making a selection right away would be quickest for that

nah, potatie, I never use solid shapes. You select the figure, invert the selection, select the layer, and delete.
