Geocities are stupid with direct-linking. Showing someone a simple image is a chore.

Disturbingly low transfer limits.

I rarely see good sites hosted under them (of course this is the decision of the webmaster).

_______

Plus, QBColony was hosted under Lycos for a while, and they did alright for a while. The only real both was the ad on the right...

I personally think Geocities is horrible. 'tis all.

i think both of them suck big time! lycos terminated my account for hotlinking a single file! Same with geocities. They have insane rules.

I use lycos (tripod). It sucks 'cause of the ads, but I currently have 1 site running with PHP (and fast, if you are able to forget that ##@#@#| side frame!), and two more accounts where I have 1 placeholder and that I use mainly to hotlink images. And I have no probs Tongue

Geocities is worse than tripod/lycos. It features less ads, but it has download and upload file size limits, too little bandwidth and doesn't allow hotlinking. Lycos may have tons of ads, but your site won't be cancelled if it has too much traffic. Also, 50 megs is better than 15.

In geocities it would be impossible to have a site like this one: http://usuarios.lycos.es/strayjaymusic ... Just mp3s. A single user a day downloading the songs would make the site unavailable the rest of the day if it were hosted in geocities.

Ok. I think i have the winner here. Hands down. Portland communications. They offer free subdomains, with no ads, no popups, no nothing, FTP support, and I think they even support PHP. Beat that.

My site hosted there: http://treefrog.8bit.co.uk

Portland:

Quote:15MB Web Space & 100MB Monthly Bandwidth

That's much too little Sad

Quote:PHP, Perl, and other CGI executables other than Escapade are not supported or allowed on Free Webhosting.

Too bad Sad

Hmm... shame, well I know that webspace and the bandwidth are rather small, not enough for a large website, but portland are very generous by not giving any banners or popups. And the 15mb is equivalent to geocities, and gives you a subdomain. So beats geocities to a bloody pulp, then. I wouldnt expect them to give anymore, really for free.

I've been using SephSYS hosting for my Qbasic page.
http://sys.blissdev.com/

It's by Seph -- a member here. It's kind of limited, but is 100% free, ad free, and easy to sign up and use.

Here's my site using it:
