How long did it take you to learn QBasic?
#21
Not very. I started by learning TI-Basic, then jumped to VB for a bit, then went to QBasic.

To be frank, I never learned QB, I played around with it at Red_Marvins place but I soon passed onto "chipmunk basic". Although I'm not sure it was better... However I didn't learn that very well either since I shortly afterwords passed onto C which I'm still learning, doing sockets, forks etc at the moment Smile

I am going to learn one thing in QBasic every day from now on. No matter what it is.

I know you did say that the code isnt what the game relies on, adosorken, but I would like to be a very efficient programmer, and I want to program code which is understood easily, as I would like to make open source projects.

Anyway, thankyou all very much for your help. It is greatly appreciated. Thx Thx Thx :-D

As time progresses in to new teck. we also most. I am a beginnr as well, after reading and thinking ,absorbing all the facts qbasic will eventually be buried .
There will be more languages created that are easier to understand than qbasic or c++ .
Qbasic really is my favorite. I have tried Dev c++ & did not like it at all. As of course we are all differant or there would only be room for 1 programmer & 1 programming language.
QBasic will eventually fade away just like GWbasic & so on
It's a matter of time. I wish this wasen't true but it is very probable
Good luck on your new adventure...

Don't you think that. If that happens, it is gonna happen in TOO MUCH TIME. I'll give you an example. Remember those old computers from the 1980s? Commodore 64, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amstrad... Those computers died commercially circa 1992-1993, but all of them have great support communities still with people who actually code games and even do hardware improvements. Geeks are everywhere, and everything has its place, no matter how old it is. QB is fun. Sure, it is old, outdated, slow, and little featured, but it is fun. As long as there are QB lovers out there, this will be supported.

MS says that MSDOS is not supported, but MSDOS programs work great in the Windows XP MSDOS virtual machine. Great, I mean great. Many people (me included) complained about compatibility when Windows XP was released, but having tested it, there is nothing to complain about. The VM is GREAT. Just understanding how different is Windows XP from MSDOS you realize that it is GREAT. New processors (at least AMDs) support 16 bits applications very well, which gives more life to good ol' QB. Sound cards problems have been solved by emulators. I can run almost any game with sound, in Windows 98 you had problems if your card was not a genuine ISA Sound Blaster 16 from Creative Labs.

About learning: you never finish learning something. Just get the basics, code your first crap games, and then read the whole FAQ in this site. It has great hints to improve.

Yes I remember all to well . I use one of those old computers a Tandy 2500 sx/33
What my point is look at GW-BASIC it's almost dead
look at QBASIC ,compare it to QB4.5...
& before you ask no I am not online with the Tandy.
There seems to be not enuf memory to embark on that journey so there again its dead (use only to learn QB with)
Computer languages will keep updating along with computers.
There will be time in which QB4.5 will be replaced with something that is even more easier to learn & better. ( I haven't found one yet but whom am I to say).

Of course there will be one day. And there will be one day where computers are replaced by brain implant devices.

GWBASIC is almost dead 'cause there is a newer version of MS Basic. It is like saying that QB 3.0 is dead. And QBasic came after QB 4.5. The reason it is dying is 'cause you don't need it no more now that QB 4.5 (with the compiler) is easier to find. QBasic was only a free version of QB 4.5 without the compiler that was distributed with MS DOS 5.0 and up. So no point here.

I don't understand the hype of saying that QB scene is dying. The same in VPlanet. I can't see it dying. Is it dying? This forum gets 50 posts a day, maybe more.
