I agree with Nek. The three phases on my life in relation to Microsoft:
1) I loved it. I even had a picture of Bill Gates on my wall in my room (not joking).
2) I despised it. People would say "you have Windows on that?" and I would say "yeah, unfortunately. Windows sucks."
3) My current position. MS Rocks! So does Linux! And FreeBSD!

Windows is flawed, as IE is (mostly 'cause the last IE version was released more than 2 years ago), but jumping on the "Windows sux" bandwagon is stupid. Why? Because most of the problems people have with Windows are because they don't know what they are doing and screw up things.
As I've said many times, I don't have problems with Windows at all (my installations are 2 and a half years old for Win98 and 1 year and 2 months old for my WinXP).
Of course, Windows has many security holes, disadvantages and stuff like that, but, as I said, jumping in bandwagons and following hypes is stupid and retarded.

I suppose no-one is a Microsoft fan b/c they do everything too quickly, and do a crappy job...Win 98 SE was probably the best O/S they have made [in my opinion, anyway].
Im sure if Microsoft took the time and effort that Mac. *usually* does, im sure Microsoft could be the best out there...
I guess the OS really depends on waht you want to do.
*nux - Programming computer....almost everything can be user defined
Win - Gaming...they always have sum kick@$$ hardware...
Mac - Graphic artist stuff....if there is only thing that Mac can do superbly, its generate graphics....since it does hold the title for fasted computer

MacOSX is so good for a very simple reason: Mac computers are built by Apple solely, using just 1 brand of each kind of device. MacOSX is more "focused" on "concrete" hardware.
With PCs it is very different.
Btw, Win98SE is rubbish. Building modern OSs on top of MSDOS is not a good idea.

but w/out MS-DOS, would this forum exsist? possibly, but not as Qbasic News, coz no-one would use QBasic....tho i suppose they could issue DOS out as another OS....not integrated

Yes that reason is a good one. But a better one is that Mac OSX kernel is modelled on the FreeBSD kernel. This gives its phenomenal speed, stability and security.
Also, lets get back on the original topic and stop discussing win98/xp/macosx/linux

MacOS was already good before MacOSX, anyways. Also, the FreeBSD kernel doesn't mean anything, the GUI, file, network and memory managers are propietary from Apple.

MS-DOS is outdated by today's standards. It was outdated in 1997, so building a 32 bits OS on top of it was not a good idea at all, considering the experience they had with Windows 95 and Windows 95 OSR 2. It was just a mistake.
It was already outdated when MSDOS v. 6.00 came out. Apple was using his graphical, 32 bits operating system MacOS so long ago. Apples were better than PCs in the 90s 'cause their operating system worked better to take advantage of the machine it was ran on. But Microsoft keep releasing more and more MSDOS versions, which were getting more and more bloated.
Windows 3.11 and below ran on top of MSDOS 'cause they were mere shells. But Windows 9X and Me were meant to be "more", i.e. complete OSs. Having to boot in MSDOS before loading Windows IS a security hole.

And I'm relating my experiences too...you're bandwagon-riding and attempting subtle coercion. Most of these slackjaws can't configure Windows, let alone Linux. Any time I see someone complain about something that doesn't work in Linux, it's always "well, just read the manual, I'm sure it's in there" and then it turns out to be a massive flaw in the OS and the response is along the lines of "well, Linux is a work in progress, it's going to have the occasional flaw". Bullshyte. Yes, it's YOUR fault Windows has done something stupid. What did you misconfigure? What file did you delete? What option did you set that you did not understand but you set it anyways, thinking you're some kind of computer genious simply because you can change the wallpaper without consulting "Windows For Dummies"? When Windows has a problem, you then should realize that you know absolutely nothing.
Hence why people like na_th_an and myself never have problems with Windows.

Of all the people I didnt expect you to say this. The kernel is the heart of the OS. WinXP has a really good GUI, the NT kernel too does a fair job. But still MacOSX is better since it has a much more stable kernel in there along with a great GUI etc...
