I completely agree with Nathan.

The arrogance of 80% of linux users I've talked to also puts me off -- again, it's this "why are you using teh n00b OS joo noob".

(That said, I have talked to quite a few very nice and helpful people that use Linux as their primary OS [shea and howl from EFNet/#quckbasic are two that come to mind] -- these are -not- the same as Linux nazis).

The wording of the poll question is exactly the attitude people shouldn't adopt -- it is childish arrogance.

I want to spend the time using programs for my OS, I don't want to spend my entire free time trying to get a new kernel module installed, then find out it's only half-written.

From what I can see, a lot of people enjoy spending their time setting up and configuring their OS to their own needs, but other people just want to get on with their work.

I would never consider using Linux as my primary OS -- I don't have the time. I can do -everything- that I want to on Windows with less hassle.

hm i forgot about the poll question and options, you're right thats stupid.

on the main os topic. i barely use windows anymore, it took me two hours to set up debian with everything i need (including ide's, jdk, tomcat server, apache server, and a bunch of multimedia players). the only trouble i had was to get my usb adsl modem to run. that took me long the rest was not really painfull.

Yeah, I meant the poll attitude. Upon it, I have a room temperature IQ. Well, at least I know how to spell "temperature".

Gotta agree. Linux arrogance is almost as bad as C or C++ or other "better" languages.

Myself, Windows XP is very nice. It's very very stable (I've only had it crash once in two years... this other program that must be run for a game will actually crashed windows xp, so i can't play it, but that's okay) It's fairly fast booting up to me, It's had a nice facelift, It's much more user friendly, and dos programs work fine on it. All they need is vdmsound and your good to go.

Windows 2k on the other hand... I dunno, it keeps on freezing on me. At least once or twice a week this laptop freezes on me. If i could, i'd switch to windows xp... if it wasn't for the price. Wink Windows XP is much nicer than Windows 2k IMO. Much more stable.

That said, even FB couldn't make me switch Operating systems. It'd take something major to force me to change... mostly b/c i'm lazy. Wink

Anyone know anything about Longhorn?

im not moving to linux, b/c of some sort of illusion that it is better than windows. "Better" is a relative term, as most terms are, and is based on the person describing something.

I personally hate M$, but I don't mind Windows...my only problem is that Windows is old and obsolete - m$ is trying to revive it by liberating it from DOS, but that is causing more of an uproar than anything. What they should do is cut all the flashy crap, and just do a straight functioning OS....it be so much more efficient...oh well

I like linux, mostly for the "shell" system (unix, is it not?)....I like the fact that everything can be traced back to primary commands, and in fact, if you know how, you can trace it all the way back. Also, the whol "open source" aspect is much better for the user, and for the IT guy that is trying to fix your machine....there are many downsides, yes, but M$ has its downsides, too....

Its all about user preference

Exactly.

Anyhow, Linux distros also have tons of flashy crap. Ever tried Genome? You need a high-end PC to run it properly, exactly like Windows XP.

urger: I once tried to dual boot Debian with XP over the summer. If you get it work, let me know, I want to try it again sometime with some of the newer features that have come out. it was a pain in the genitalia to set it up with the right packages and a copy of KDE, and then I forgot my password and forgot about it. Linux is a fun experiment for me, but nothing more. There isn't enough software support for what I do.

It works for some people as a desktop, but others not. I've heard there are some other interesting free desktop-oriented operating systems, but they don't have near the support that Linux does in both the business and personal computing world.

Interesting note: My school uses Firefox on Gnome as an internet terminal for guests: It loads a firefox windows and nothing more. A step up from my high school computers where you could type in "C:\" into internet explorer and get around every security there was.

Im dual booting WinXP and Linux. I havent used my Linux partition much recently because I have actually had a number of problems with it. I have a Lucent WinModem which has been an absolute pain to get drivers working for, I have tried both the source version (wouldnt compile) and the binaries (unresolved externals when loading the module). Both are supposed to be easy to install. I have also had to recompile the stock Redhat 8.0 kernel because it didnt support some features I needed (such as NTFS support) out of the box.

I have been running WinXP for a while now and it has been as stable as a rock. I use the OS the is best for the job Im doing at the time. I do prefer Linux for developing under, but also use WinXP.

Linux isn't a better/worse OS to Windows, it is a /different/ operating system. It does somethings better and other things worse, whether or not you should use it or switch to it as your primary operating system depends on your needs as a user.
