Migrating to Linux

Agreed completly. Root is for special circumstances only. Using Root user regularly is the real root of 50% of all the problems with windows. The idea of multiple users just isn't part of the culture yet. Hopefully that will change in the future.

Quote:99% of stuff that needs superuser rights only need them when installing unless they are administration tools, which should be used by superusers.

I have a few games that require superuser rights to run, I have no idea why. It would be nice if you could do normal user installs under Windows, like installing to one of the /local directories or your home directory in Unix.

Quote:I've seen people disconnecting the printer in the middle of a printing just 'cause they found that they made a mistake... Of course, Windows goes funny.

I would think in a situation like this that its fine for the operating system to complain, but if it crashed then I would consider it a bug or design flaw.

But I do agree that the average Linux user is more computer savvy than the average Windows user so they tend to have less problems. But too many people still run there machines for day to day use as the superuser.

GNU/Linux is a great OS. Even windows XP cant stand upto it, simply because it doesnt give "complete" control over the OS. To fix something in XP you need to depend on Windows to repair it for you or you're looking at a complete reinstall. If Ms would give better admin tools with windows then that would really help. Today WinXP, which is supposed to be very stable, crashed 4 times  This is what pisses me off :???:

Windows XP just takes more than a basic knowledge of Windows to be able to perform low-level operations. Oh wait, same thing applies to Linux. Well, Windows XP in the hands of a newbie is an intimidating beast. Oh wait, same with Linux. Well, Windows XP is all nicey-nicey and pretty-like. Oh wait, Linux does that now too. Hrm...well, Windows XP has many, many documented security fixes, as well as many new documented security flaws. Well I'll be a son-of-a-biatch, so does Linux.

See a pattern developing here, folks? Big Grin

Oh, I almost forgot...Windows has FreeBASIC. Wait a sec, Linux has FreeBA...oh wait, no it doesn't, at least not yet. I guess we finally found a difference between Windows and Linux. :rotfl:

I'm dual-booting right now (on my brand-spanking new Dell with 19" Flatpanel monitor Wink). As I'm a web developer, I use debian linux (120GB partition), but I have 39GB for Windows. I mostly use that for games, and, if ever the need arises, I'll use it for complicated word processing.

Anyway, all of you who are backing windows have valid points, but forget the usual hole - Internet Explorer. My XP is fine, runs fine, plays my games fine, runs my Office 2K3 just fine. But I don't trust Explorer with my browsing. And considering that using the internet is a primary use of a computer these days, I'm not surprised at the number of people who bitch at MS after having to yet again remove some spyware/adware...

I started up IE once. It went to the xtramsn site (New Zealand homepage for Windows XP). I went straight to mozilla.org/products/firefox, then to mozilla.org/products/thunderbird (though I won't be answering my e-mail in XP for a loooong time). Then I shut IE down, and ran a batch script to disable it.

If I ever connect to the internet in XP, I'll do it through Firefox, with the AVG virus checker running. That way I think that XP will remain my first choice for games and word processing.

However, Linux remains safest for internet browsing, and generally better for development of any sort (unless you're a VB/ASP nut...)
