Here's a little dose of reality when it comes to females on a programming forum:
1. Programming forums are dominated by males, and they are generally either hormone-driven adolescents or older guys with real lives (heh like me!
). A female shows up on a programming forum, and what usually happens? "OMG A GURL HUH HUH *drool* *drool* HAY BABIE WANA GOT OUT WITH ME HUH HUH". It's moronic. I wonder if this happened to Meg at all? Probably.
(Never really happened to Rhiannon because people knew she was with me from the start, and who's got the balls to do anything in that case? )
2. Female programmers are rarely seen as serious. Programming is a male-dominated field where females rarely tread, mainly for reason #1. So when one doesn't reveal their gender, they are automatically assumed to be male. Because of this, they can be taken more seriously. It's a simple fact of life.
Therefore, any female on a programming forum is in a lot of trouble unless she does one of two things: either hides their true identity completely, or is able to prove their seriousness from the start. If it is true that Z!re is female (I've seen pictures of Z!re before, and thought Z!re looked a bit feminine but didn't think anything else about it because frankly, it's rather immaterial), then Z!re has successfully done both things.
I'd knock on wood, but my desk is particle board.
