Windows XP Problems
#11
As is my habit I have again stirred up something here. All this does not alter the fact that these problems of unstable folder settings do not appear to occur with the old Win 98. Why should I have to tout around the net for special any virus and anti spyware software to solve a problem that does not occur with earlier versions of Windows. If MS had got the product right in the first place the problem should never have occurred.

Likewise I see I am have now been invited by the MSN site to update my Win XP Home by spending some 20 minutes online downloading numerous patches ( even on Broadband ), to protect my system from all sorts of scum around who spend their lives dedicated to spoiling other peoples simple pleasures. Why the heck should I have to go online all that time for such a purpose, when I have Norton and Adaware installed, that is suppose to protect me from these wretched individuals. Chances are the longer I log onto such an active site as MSN, the more likely I will be hacked into anyway! How do MSN expect those who do not wish to use the Net ( yes there are many such people around ) to protect themselves, when transferring data via floppies/CDs etc.

Calm down gordon. Think about the 56kers Wink They are relatively protected but still they are susciptible to viruses and malware Sad

once more now. blaming OS = wrong. blaming Microsoft = wrong. blaming user = *ding ding ding*.

actually in this case, you didn't get SP2(or so it sounds) so there are bound to be little things like that to occur
the mind is a beautiful thing, use it and make the world a more beautiful place.

Browsing through my collection of ancient Shareware I found a nice little Widows File manager called Turbo Navigator that still works ok with Win XP. I displays ALL files irrespective of your Windows settings, so be careful what you move or delete, although deletions appear in the recycle bin as usual. Like some other file managers, you have the option of one or two windows to allow dragging of files. You can also manage Favourites etc

Most important unlike the stupid My Computer and Windows Explorer on my system it does remember how you last set the window when activated!!

Man, again:

none of us has that problem. It is your problem, not Windows XP's. Plasma's link explains why.

I thing you should read a couple of Windows XP tutorials and learn to work with it instead of blaming it for your own faults.

What I don't understand is that if you hate WXP so much why you use it. Get back to your beloved Windows 98.

You are of course probably quite right, as I think I have now found the problem. I previously set the folder options to ‘Open each folder in its own window’ assuming this to mean once a window is set it will stay the same. Now I have changed to ‘Open each window in the same window’ which I thought meant it would take the drastic action of making ALL windows look the same!!

It would seem my sense of logic is quite different to MS; so goodness knows what these phrases really mean. But I think someone else posted it had the same problems

Thanks all. Gordon

Gordon, go here;
My Computer > Tools > Folder options > View (tab) > Remember Each Folder's View Setting ( check box )

Now put a check accross that checkbox and windows should retain each folder's view settings independently.

Thanks kindly, but I already had that settup, and I realize now my last post relates to whether you want just one or more folders to show at once.

I think I found theproblem at last - on My Computer under View there is a Refresh that seem to persuade it to retain settings.

Gordon: the answer is in the link that Plasma originally posted for you. Follow its directions and your problem will disappear immediately. Editing the registry isn't exactly trivial in many cases but if you pay attention and do exactly what the directions say, then you'll be just fine. This is a very common problem in Windows XP up to SP2, so you're certainly not the first person to run across it.

And yes, guys...it really IS an operating system bug this time. Big Grin So he's well within his rights to blame the OS for something it really is doing wrong.

Thanks Guys. I did not notice the tiny link on the word ‘this’ until I scrolled back to the post by Plasma. I will see if I can summon up the courage to tinker with Regedit, especially as it would appear I am by no means the only one ‘in the boat’. I have used Regedit with Win 98 to sort out a few bugs, but never Win XP. I wonder if Win XP comes with this bug or is it picked up somewhere along the way, and whether one of the numerous patches MS want me to download has the cure.

Another bug that annoys me is when I ask it to sort the files in the folder by name, it decides to sort them in reverse order! Also it does not seem to recogise the request to sort by type. Try it out yourself guys, because perhaps I am the only awkward ****!!

I did notice Plasma has kindly now made dear old QuickBasic freely available.

Incidentally I have nearly managed to get my QB version of a mouse driven automatic button menu running under FB, but I might need some help from you experts.

Thanks Gordon
