D&D

That looks cool. I know you just did a real quick interface, but it would be cool to make the buttons for the dice look like the actual shape of the dice. You could also have a *party* window off to the side that shows all your allies. Tongue

Yes, this image is missing a lot of things that would be needed, such as a chat window, for example. Smile I mainly did this up to show that this is indeed a feasible idea.

Edit: Voice chat is also a very real possibility with this thing. That would be preferrable to text chat, but obviously everyone can text chat so it would be required as well. Big Grin

A few things...

1) I think we are all agreed we will be doing AD&D vs. D&D... I have no idea the difference, but what I gathered from opinions, AD&D is better.

2) We might need to take a vote on the previous statement (which to use), but I *know* we will need to vote on what version to use. I've been told 1.0 is the absolute best because it allows for you to use your imagination the most; however, this may not be feasable over the internet.

3) Text chat will have to be manditory, whether or not we use the phpBB or some program that we create (like Nek is describing).

3.5) Voice chat would definately be preferred, to create that more realistic "sitting around the table" scenario... However, I do believe we would need a professional IM program to do so:

- phpBB or any forum will not allow voice chat, as it is not an immediate medium.
- any chat medium we create cannot possibly support voice chat... (or could it?)

If this is correct, then we could possibly use a combination of the two: the forum to post our moves and actions (such as the result of a die roll), and the chat thing we might create (or borrow) to do the temporary things (such as rolling dice, or chatting about what we can and cannot do, etc).

Is it possible we can avoid the program Nek is talking about and all of us simply use MSN or Yahoo for the voice chat? This way we could all enter the same room, and chat together...

I'll go there later, too many forums Big Grin

I'd like to help in whatever I can, I never played the game itself but I'm willing to learn and I think i'm a decent coder... or I look like I am Big Grin

Anyhow, diss the voice chat thingo. It would restrict the game to only native English speakers.

To me, the easiest way to approach this is with a simple server-client application. The server is ran by the DM. It can consult every value the clients have. Dice are trown in the server. Clients are just silly terminals with a chat box and a display of values, except when creating the character when you can make choices from your client which are registered on the server.

The problem this has is that you need an ID for your client, so the server can associate you with your data. This can be done in the easiest way possible, in which the client request connection, and the server assigns an ID number and creates a session for the client, then sends an ACK signal to the client.

The main problem arising is data storage. A good storage method should be designed. If we register usernames, the server could use that username sent by the client to fetch the correct info from a database.

It's not hard at all if we plan it good.

That thought had crossed my mind as well.

Easy stuff. Big Grin

That can be done using the standard username/password setup.

Hey, I could always revive my Crescent Twilight server and retrofit it to work this kind of thing. The only problem with it is that it runs in Unix. Big Grin

Well, considering that nathan seems to be the only non-English speaking participant from this forum, this should not be a problem (besides, I thought you spoke English well)... And if we happen to get like 20 people who join the forum and wanna play, then I guess voice-chatting can be optional?

Speaking of which, do we all understand that this is pretty much a QBN game? I mean, you can bring an outsider if you wish, but I think 10 poeople would be more than enough to have a fun game, and we don't even have 10 people wanting to play yet Wink
