Quote:woah.. woah... woaaah!.. How did I miss THIS topic.

Few questions.
1) Don't blame hardware. Blame Microsoft.... It makes youself look less silly (believe it or not)
2) How do you put a PSU in backwards.. I don't even see how that's possible..
3) "I put the power supply in backwards and a loud buzz occurs," WHAT THE HECK!?!? Did you not even unplug it??
4) If you didn't.. it explains what happens to you HD.
5) "yet I am going to college to be a electrician..." "Well fuse was blown and we figured out that it was hardwired into the wall"
6) You laughed at a dead HD... sheesh I almost cried when one of mine started clicking and then died.
7) .. are you -sure- you killed the HD? PSU might have friedn first =p.
8) I recommend one thing.. ground your outlets.
9) "Replcaing a mouse means paying money," is a wireless mouse really needed..? You can get wired ball mice for like.. $0.30 >_<
10) Kizzard, what have I told you about eating your face.
11) axipher, get a bootdisk then format.
12) "but why would you want to format your HD anyway, simply installing Windows XP deletes all files anyway." Format does not mean delete all files. Deleting all files.. means deleting all files. When you format you also lose the filesystem and EVERYTHING is cleared. When you install over it you might get a fragmented HD =p

That's it. Seeyas =p

Well who said I wnted to look less silly, and it was more of as soon as the PSU touched the prongs of the HD it buzzed, my uncle grabbed it from me and held it there, and it doesn't go in backwards, but putting it in on an angle works. Now regarding the outlet, it wasn't us who wired it, when we did get it out eventually, it wasn't grounded, imagine having a whole entertainment system plus your computer plugged into it and 1 thing frying, everything would go, I think anyway. Now I don't want a ball mouse, I can easily go in my storgae room and pull out 8, last time I counted anyway and the formatting thing, I had a virus infecting my HD, not a file but the HD, so I reinstalled Windows XP Home and the virus was no more, unless my HD was special. Now if you cried at your HD clicking, my "accident" would have been an opera for you with special effects, those being minor sparks and the beautiful smell of burned plastic... Mmmmm, burnt plastic, chicken burgers are better though.

Huh? Were you doing this while the machine is running or what? You should have the computer switched off and the cable unplugged before you do any tinkering.

Quote:Then a week later, I am at my uncle's house and one of the builder's hardwired a 6 outlet plug into the wall, thinking it was just plugged in, my uncle tries to pull it out. It doesn't want to come out so he decides to grab a screwdriver and try to pry it out

Doing smart things like this can wind you up dead. Put the screwdriver in the wrong place and you'll find yourself connected to the mains.

You dont want to use a readily available ball-mouse even though your current optical one wigs out and clicks all over the screen for you? Well, I guess beggars can be choosers after all ;-)

Haha I was kidding about blaming Microsoft making you look less silly. Sorry I just wanted to see if he'd say it. My bad. >_<

Anyways:
Code:
I had a virus infecting my HD, not a file but the HD, so I reinstalled Windows XP Home and the virus was no more, unless my HD was special.
Wait... Can virii even infect HDs? and uhm... what? How do you even know it was a virus then? (if it wasn't picked up by a virus scanner). Maybe it just needed a good ol defrag?

And also:
@axipher: Did you unplug it? or did you try to hotswap a HD?

the closet I know of a virus that doesn't affect a file persay simply runs in ram and continually writes to one spot on your harddrive, thus destroying it...A pretty nasty program imo

Pretty much like Deleter said, except when I ran the virus scnner (Norton and McAfee), they both picked up on it but it was called ???.??? and was a ??? type of virus, so they couldn't delete it, and no the computer was not running, but it was pluuged in and the power switch was on, we were trying it while continuously booting the computer to see if it worked and then buzz, and the screwdriver I used was coated with a material that is resistant to 10,000 volts which is much more then your average apartment outlet.

Newer machines/PSUs actually still supply a small amount of power to the board even when they are switched off, which is why you should always have the machine unplugged from the wall before you attempt any "maintainance". It also helps to know what you are doing before you go randomly pulling bits in and out of your computer.

Still not a good idea to play with the mains supply. Like I said, one mistake and you'll wind up dead.

First off, you can't really call it maintenance, it was trying to access the HD which was password protected through Windows 2000 and we couldn't in so I got a suggesstion to try and use a second HD and format the other HD, and I nkew what I was doing, just the HD's power input place was a square so the PSU fit both ways, I could have looked at the colors, but that would require me to to extra work.

For the second comment, if I were to die, which I highly doubt, who would really actually miss me???

I know I am stupid, actually it's more of lazy, but I am sure there is smoe stupid in tehre anyway, and hwo would I go about converting to Z!reism, I'm already a lost cause, I'm long gone, but what harm could converting to Z!reism do.

P.S.: Please make no comment on me not being lazy by typing I am instead of I'm or just typing properly period.
