How often so you reformat/restore your system/s?
#41
That's a fact: 99% of "Windows problems" are due to an inexpert user running in Administrator mode. Period.

If you know what you are doing, your OS will be strong and undestructible. I only reformatted my dev computer (which I also use to browse Internet, download stuff and play games) 2.5 years after the first install, and that was 'cause I performed a massive hardware upgrade and I felt like spending two hours of my spare time.

Reinstalling often is something completely needless if you know what you're doing.

And I agree with LooseCaboose, as always: Windows ME is a MEssed piece of crap  To me it's kinda idiotic to write an operating system which is still running on top of MSDOS which tries to hide MSDOS...

Do you know how long it takes to defrag my hard drive once a week? What about scanning for errors? I can reinstall back to a working system in less than an hour. Don't ask me why these tools take forever.

You shouldn't need to defrag on a weekly basis. Most home computer users never really need to defrag, if you want to though you can always leave it running over night as it doesn't require any interaction, unlike a reinstall. Note, that if you reinstall only the operating system but leave the filesystems intact, they will remain fragmented. If you did a clean install and then installed all of the software you had, then you would end up with very little, or no fragmentation, but it would probably take you far longer than just defraging the drive.

As for scanning for errors (Physical errors on the disk), it would take just as long on an existing system as it would to do it before installing. Most operating installs do not force a physical harddrive check however.

Who said I did it? I was using an example. Either way, I find even with all the protection in the world and al the maintenance, Windows gets so cluttered and messed up that sometimes a reinstall is the best option. In fact, I just did another reinstall tonight. It's running a lot better now.

He was saying unless you do a complete reinstall of everything, not just the os, you'll still have the fragmentation in the installed programs. So essentially, to reinstall both the os and programs, you'll spend more time than a defragmentation program would.

I find defrag is too slow.

That's not true if you know what you are doing. As I told you, my system lasted 2.5 years, and I reformatted 'cause I was basicly changing everything hardware-wise and wanted to give the thingo another arrangement. But it worked as good as the 1st day.

Well, let's say the lack of anti-anything didn't help. But this tmie and the previous time I have been protected so things haven't been so bad. My reason for formatting was just a psychological thing when I got ADSL back. I wanted everything with a "clean slate".

I'm sure that this time your system will take longer to get cluttered.

Granted, when I had my first Windows box it got to shit after 2 weeks
