arg!! Wings3d... try Wings3d and see how you feel about that Smile

www.wings3d.com

slmost forgot.. if you have a little money to burn, or dont mind steeling software ;p you can get a modeling program caclled AC3d...

www.ac3d.org

dont let these people fool you ;P i'm an accomplished modeler and i cant stand anim8or and blender... yeah, they got great features.. but there not the only good programs around... even tho it seems thats all you ever here about...

me and rattrapmax6 have had this discution over and over, he prefers blender annd anim8or... its all a matter of taste really, i mean, different interfaces are conducive to different learning and work flow styles... so i definately encourage you to try those 2 out Smile

ac3d has a demo btw, if you wanna chek it like that, and i think you can score the full version for like... 50bucks wich really isnt bad at all, considering 3dsmax is like 600bucks!

well, hopefully this information helps you out..

cheers

If we are going commercial, nothing beats Lightwave or 3D Studio Max.

price? if you wanna go commercial, ac3d wins in the bang for buck category... i doubt a beginning user wants to pay 600 to get started.. unless he's a rich s.o.b

ac3d = 50.00us
3dsmax = 650.00us
lightwave = 400.00us

i've used all of them, i probably spent about a month using 3dsmax, and in my opinion, ac3d gives most bang for thet buck... although personally i'd rather use wings3d, if i'm not using wings, i'm using ac3d....

650 is just not a price thats conducive to the general public... thats a fairly innaccesible price for most... i know i definately didnt see 600 dollars worth of functionality there... not a chance

I mean, nothing beats. We are talking about the best 3d modelling program, not about the best value for money 3d modelling program Wink

Plus you can get them for free if you know where to ask...

...

... at college, of course. Students editions are free. I have 3D Studio Max 6 in a legal, original CD. I can use it as long as I don't go commercial. If only I could use it... Big Grin (I suck at 3d art).

Well I tried out that Eggplant tutorial with Anim8or...it's the first time I've touched a 3D modeler program for more than 5 minutes. It took me a few tries, and it isn't all that great, but here it is:

[EDIT]Oops. I made it with Anim8or, not lightwave. Slip of the fingers.

I've used 3DS and Lightwave, and I have to say that they both have their pros & cons. However, Lightwave is simply more versatile, comes with a shitload of free plugins and has a built in scripting language(Lscript, which is very similar to C) that allows you to manipulate anything in the scene. In essence, you can create your own lscript plugins, or modify others to your liking. If you use the SDK, you can even create commercial plugins... and there is a nice fat market for 'em.

If anyone does decide to use Lightwave, Flay is a great place to get free plugins. Wink

Also, has Milkshape been mentioned? A good friend of mine(who happens to be an excellent 3D artist) loves this program. It's only 25 bucks too. Wink
