You cant turn them off.
That and (this is VERY NOTICABLE under image intesnse threads) it can interfear with saving the webpage, becuse IE likes to refresh all images when it saves etc etc, and it tries to grab them all from different hosts, fails, and then sits their doing nothing.

Get mozilla. Problem solved.
I'm thinking it's probably where you click a "Karma" button on someone's post, and that particular post will be added to the user's karma, so when peopel visit their profile, they can view a specific post that may have been mean, or helpful or something, and have an opinion of the poster from THAT instead of post count... I think it would be an awesome idea...

And don't just get rid of the post count. Replace it with something. Make a QBnews only hack so the board will be even more unique..... or something. Smile
Now that i heard you say what karma is i think ive heard of it before. i think it is that people vote for the person and the blahblahblah karma blah blah goes up! and i QBnews only hack sounds fun but what would it be?
I don't think anyone will ever bother clicking "promote this post's Karma", for several reasons:
1) What if the viewer has a grudge against the poster?
2) If the person is hurried, rushed, they'll just read the post and leave.
3) Newbies, and those who don't know what the Karma system is won't click "promote this post" or "demote this post".
It would be better to have a karma system that adds the "post" to a database rather than "points". That could lead to all kinds of problems..
Nathan,
Just thought I'd back you up on this subject of one-liners. You have a legitimate complaint. But, don't get so upset that you might consider not visiting this forum anymore, please, we need you.

Yes, well whitetiger's been bugging me about the chat mod also... I'm gonna shake up the moderators' forum Wink

Quote:Would be the Karma system very hard to implement?

I dunno. It looks like (from viewing 2.2) that it would at the least be a pretty big mod, and at worst not even made. I'll have a dig for it.

Quote:Let's talk by example. Let's reset our post counts to ZERO. Big Grin If 5 top posters jump into this wagon, I agree to have my post count reset Tongue

Fine with me Smile. I don't know if it's possible, but I'll dig around for a mod just in case it is.

Quote:Oracle, how hard is it to make the post count only visible from a members view profile page? That way people can retain their precious post counts, but others will only see them if they visit that persons profile. Just an idea.

That's a very good idea, it's very easy to do Wink. I'll bug the others about it.

I'll have a look around for karma mods, reset post count mods, and see about some other mods. Installing a mod will be for me a bit of a change from the monotomy of the stuff I'm doing currently Wink
I'll reset my post count, but I believe that's kind of useless, and won't make a big impression. But go ahead, if it will stop people
from spamming.
Just out of curiosity, why not disable the post count?

I mean, everyone knows na_th_an, and I don't think that would change just because you can't see how many posts he has?

Sure it gives some status on you being here long and posting a lot, but wouldn't it be better to go by the time registered at the forum and visits per day or something?

Or as suggested, for nostalgic purpose, to only be able to see the post count on the user profile screen, not in the forums.

Would it be hard to remove users that hasn't logged in for, let's say, 3 months? I have a feelings there's a lot of "dead" users registered here (homework beggers for instance *hate*).

The chat room wouldnt just be an autorefreshed tagboard - you'd only be uploading every few seconds with the timer value for the last refresh. The cgi program would send an http header with 1 byte - 0 or 1. If it's 1, it'll be accompanied by the messages since that last refreshing...

ideally, you could do it in less than 100 bytes a second + the messages. If you left it on *all day*, you'd only have about 9mb in dead space. I guess if you braced for 10 people online average, that's about a 270mb a month estimate.

Of course, there's got to be a way to cut that down. Right now, the only way I know how to communicate through the internet with javascript is through hidden frames... (or those ill-fated socket routines on Netscape you had to manually turn on in the browser). I guess the only real way to get it any smaller is have the server contact the browser when a new post is made, and you can't really do that without java or flash or *insert plugin here*

As for the post issue, I guess the most ideal thing to do would be for the admins to give out ranks, but that's tedius. Maybe forum awards like a golden ribbon would honor the really helpful peeps out there, or something different for good programmers who show off cool stuff.
