Quote:Palladium is the new OS by MS, it will be TC compliant. (They have changed name, palladium got in bad water with some people arguing about what I said. Total control and such)

Palladium is the name of Microsoft/Intels security chip used to implement TCPA and some extra things like DRM. Microsofts new operating system is currently codenamed Longhorn and includes some interesting new features like WinFS.

Quote:MS (And the rest) is required by law to release the source for all security software (as can log user details and such) so MS/rest releasing the source is not out of free will.

Trusted systems (not TCPA) are used in high security environments. For a system to be classified as 'Trusted' it must conform to the Orange Book trusted system specifications, a summary is here, or the full text here. The higher classifications require that the security model is mathmatically proven and that the source code (or parts of it) are released for third party scrutiny. Trusted systems are usually only available as a complete system (ie hardware and software), this is so drivers, etc can be verified. One of the aims of TCPA is to bring all computer systems closer to being classified as 'Trusted' systems.

Quote:As I said, it's not the thought that this WILL happen the way I say, it's the thought that it CAN happen.
Agreed, but think about what /could/ happen if something like TCPA is not introduced in the future. Spam already makes up a considerable amount of the email sent each year, media and software theft and redistribution is simple and cheap in the digital realm, trojans, adware and activity loggers are easily installed on remote systems and are intrusive of privacy, etc. As hardware specs increase and access speeds to the internet are raised these problems get worse, spammers can send more spam, downloading an entire DVD movie will take a matter of minutes, etc. The /aims/ of projects like TCPA, Palladium and DRM are to fix these problems, the main arguments against each of these is that we place control in the hands of a group of big companies, the alternative is that we place control in the hands of a group of faceless hackers.

Something does need to be done to fix the problems of the internet, spamming and hacking. TCPA is a good step in the right direction, unfortunately it is surrounded by a lot of FUD because people have misinterpretted what TCPA is, or have wildly speculated about what TCPA will do.

The TCPA is a new means for big companies to experiment with new business models. Nothing more, nothing less. It is a financial move, and one Microsoft and Intel are both trying to wrest control over. Don't think for a second that they even listen to the other 200+ companies involved (who, by the way, are all major players with deep pockets). TCPA will not be finalized for a very long time, though...Microsoft and Intel are both trying to get the upper hand on TCPA and both have their own ideas of how it should work. Therefore, until there is a winner, we're either going to see no TCPA or two different TCPA implementations.

And I would rather place trust in the hands of faceless hackers than in big business. Big business wants your money and will do anything to get it, and that includes making you dependant on a brand name and then foregoing quality for name, and raising prices at the same time. Hackers do what they do out of curiosity and fun, and are not going to try to make a profit off of you. If you're referring to the idiots who crack into big systems, you're not talking about hackers anymore...you're talking about crackers, and they're far different.

Then again...if the whole world was Unix-based...well, 95% of these problems would already be gone. Smile

Wow. This has to be stopped. It would mark the end of programming for everybody that doesn't work for an enormous company.

Quote:Bye-bye Linux. Wink

Dude, I will kill to keep Linux alive  and there are many like us. So rest assured Linux is here to stay!

BTW IMO TCPA should end up like the PIN on Intel's PIII processors which they had to eventually disable because of popular demand =D.

I hope you're joking. (Federal government breaks down tBBQ's door as a warning. Yes, doesn't matter where you live..)

If parents payed attention to their children, this wouldn't be an issue.

Quote:child pornographers
The TCPA isn't going to stop this.

Quote:bank-hackers
One word: UNIX.

Quote:big-time spammers
The TCPA isn't going to stop this either.

That's the whole reason Intel went for the gang mentality for the TCPA. With a number of companies behind their efforts, they have a lot more pull.

Say it! Why wont you say Linux for one god damned time? UNIX always UNIX. You're never supportive of Linux* =P.

For those who dont understand that was a joke
* Nek was once supportive of Linux when he mentioned that none of the Microsoft products could beat it on the server front.

Because they're all the same thing to me. Linux, Solaris, XINU, Minix, BSD...they all fall under the UNIX umbrella. Therefore I say UNIX.

Nah, then you should ideally use "*nix variants" or "*nixes" or "*nix systems" =*).
