Missing In Action...
#41
Hi

I've been looking into this Freebasic language. Qoop was the last thing I made, so I've been out of the loop for a while. Back then Future Library had just come out, but was so full of bugs that a lot of the code that I used in Qoop would need to be redesigned. Aside from high-res support, it lacked the functionality at that time to do what I wanted it to do.

Anyway, I have a few questions about Freebasic, as I'm trying to get back into this after over 3 years out of the loop. I was thinking of porting it into VB6 but that would be a whole pile of work.

Does Freebasic require you to write the code in an editor and then compile it every time you want to test it?

Are any decent graphic libraries available (true colour, high res, 3D texture support, etc)?

I've seen a number available for download but arent sure where to start. Maybe if you can point me in the right direction I will consider converting the game and redoing all the graphics.

1.- Yes.

2.- TinyPTC, Allegro, SDL, OpenGL, DirectX... you decide Big Grin Anyhow, the built in functions allow hi res, hi colour, and are quite fast.

To Blackfog once again:

I will have to agree with Na_th_an here, ‘cause he’s right. Absolutely. Big Grin !

You know, there is indeed a lot of choices for built-in graphics libs for FB that are already out right now like the ones that Na_th_an has just clearly mentioned here. In addition, there are some *excellent* sound libs already built in into FB as well such as BASSMOD and BASS v2.0 (my personal favorite sound lib!! Cool=b ), and also the very cool FMOD sound system. Man, you gotta give them all a try. Sure it may take you somewhat of a good deal of pratice for you to implement the music and sounds in your games and stuff, but hey, I say try ‘em out and see which one is right for you. You’ll be glad you did!! Wink

If using FMOD is just your thing here as part of your aural part of the FB port of Qoop, then I recommend you read shiftLynx’s AWESOME tutorial for the FMOD sound system in FB. There, you will learn the true ins and outs of how to implement your sounds and musics (including MODs, S3Ms, and even MIDIs, too!) into FMOD and FB like a real surefire ace!!! Big Grin

Hey, whatever you do and whatever you choose, I wish you such *excellent* good fortune on your FB port of Qoop, even for when you are ready, too!!

Talk to you again now, and thanks so much, Blackfog!!! :bounce:

QB should NEVER be forgotten. One QB society has crumbled already, but I'm sure that neither I nor you guys will let this one dissolve. QB lives!!! (I'm gonna write a patriotic song for QB)

In spite of what Bill Gates and MS might try to do to expand their mighty Windows empire, so far as I am concerned QB will never die, while clever guys like those who created DOSBOX are around, and likewise other old Basics will never die either. Though I must admit I had no success in installing and running WINDOS. Besides if anyone cares to do a prime number test of say 1000 numbers, I think you will still find QB runs much faster than many Widows Basics.

In addition to there still being a great following for the old UK Spectrum games, someone in this forum kindly put me onto http://modelb.bbcmicro.com/ for playing the many BBC games around. For more serious applications under a Windows environment have a look at the links from http://www.rtrussell.co.uk/. There is a very active Yahoo egroup for BBC BASIC for Windows centered around this software, of which I am also a member. Some of the clever guys in this egroup swear they can only achieve certain jobs with this software based largely on BBC BASIC.

What continues to baffle me is the effectiveness of the copyrights on these old Spectrum and BBC games, of which I have many, together with images of the many ROMS used in the old BBC computer.
Buzz me if anyone is interested, on any not already on my site.

Wow! This topic is still around! Smile

Since i last looked here all my stuff almost "missed in action", but due to that strange situation i was ended, i could merge everything, so i rised back in life Running Cheetah Software! Smile With an abundance of QBasic programs Big Grin

Sadly the truth is not really this, i have to write tons of HTML until everything will be there. When i had seen everything together i almost could not believe that i did it. I created so many programs - and i think only three of them can be called finished Sad

And i think they will be never finished anymore - the blue screen of death took control over everything. I had always got problems no matter how many times i reinstalled QBasic, or Windows itself and that made me saying "enough!" (My computer is not powerful enough to do anything with DosBox).
fter 60 million years a civilization will search for a meteorite destroying most of the living creatures around this age...

There must be a better future for the Cheetahs!

Reliving a dead topic.

1 - Lachie, I'll take on that challange. But I am space limited, and I have a whole archive of stuff here. All I need is a PHP search system designed to fit the site and perhaps take on the phpBB theme stylesheets.

2 - What about Star Wrek? Could anyone imagine that on network play in FreeBasic?

3 - Who the hell are we kidding? QB IS LONG DEAD! DOS IS LONG DEAD! Arguing this fact is like saying my poor mother is alive 5 years after her untimely death! *Looks over at Elvis.* The fact is, QB is dead. But it is still around. And will be a great beginner's tool for those wishing to start with BASIC and end up throwing GFX commands to OpenGL or something.

4 - http://www.qbasicnetwork.com End SitePlug.
