EMPYREAN: Arena of Fire

The GFX are marvelous, but I have a "but"... The true-colour to indexed palette conversion is a little bit dirty (I mean, too much random pixels here and there, due to dither). Which algorithm did he use?

I've noticed that ordered dither works better in most GFX for games. I've gotten superb results with Photoshop facilities.

For which gfx? The menu images, opening two screens, and pre- and post- game characters were converted from truecolour, and everything else is pixel painting. It may be because we're going to a custom palette that's a little wierd sometimes.

btw - I converted the black and white pregame images... I picked the non-dither option. It looked the best as far as being rough yet not grainy. As far as the others, I dunno, but they look fine to me... which images specifically have the problem?

Also: I haven't had a chance to stress-test any of the code for memory leaks yet, so if anyone's going to try playing the game for extended periods, it'd be great if you could change characters/maps every round just to make sure it's no forgetting to unload something...

Wow, this game rocks!
Very proff.

What is it with people and floats? Floats is no major slowdown, not even in qb. At least not with ffix. Hey, I used it in martian venture.

Man, you make me want to make another platform game!

Not a problem, my friend Wink I meant the backdrops. There is so much colour bleeding. I mean, the dither looks very bad in those images. But I didn't meant that you quantized without dither, I meant that you should play a little bit with the settings. I've used the "ordered dither" with better results than the floyd-stheimberg/stukki you seem to be using...

I've took this truecolour picture:

With the standard dither (diffusion or whatever) and with an extreme quantization (I've chosen a very odd 16 colours palette) it looks this way:

Note what I call "colour bleeding": There are random pixels of colours that don't suit the context in many places. That's why I prefer the ordered dither, which reduces this effect:

Also it is a good policy to retouch the dithered image in a 8-bit drawing program to reduce that bleeding even more.

dither only looks bad when it's not needed. notice most of that picture looks fine without dither:

but it's the huge, blended gradients that need the dither. I cut out that backdrop behind him, and dithered it with the previous palette, then pasted it back on.

yup. Nice work. I still prefer ordered dither (your method but with ordered dither would have hit 100% my taste Wink ).

(uh... the person in the pic is supposed to be a girl LOL).

I was only arguing 'cause the game rocks in aesthetics, but those background are the weak point. Truecolour to indexed is a very difficult task, not just a matter of click on a menu option. I know those backgrounds are accesory, but if you want a clean, perfect product you should spend some time optimizing them.

one word:

well, actually, that could be consideret two words, couldn't it?
Is it one word just because it's an acronym, or is it still two words? Can you even call an acronym a word?

The questions are many...

Ah, I see what you mean... Yeah, I'll get him to try it with different settings...

Joakim: Making a bot for this is well beyond my abilities. In lieu of that, I hope to include a dumb training droid that just hovers around and shoots missiles at you... It will have no intelligence except that it seeks to you and tries to open a line of sight. It will become more agressive with time and you'll be rated on total time survived. The main problem will be ensuring that you can't just camp somewhere that's unreachable for the droid.
